Steinbrenner and the future of the Yankees

From my blog, Sports Agent News

“His job is on the line” , Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner stated yesterday, about Joe Torre, before the Yankees 8-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.

So, what now that the Yankees have lost? Was Steinbrenner merely trying to rile up his team so that they perform well and “save their manager’s job?” OR is Steinbrenner planning on firing the manager who has won 4 world series titles since 1996 (although they all came before 2001). Regardless of what happens, Torre will bounce back. He is definitely used to Steinbrenner and his tirades, and if he leaves New York, I’m sure that he is a good enough manager to catch on with another team (maybe St. Louis if something happens to LaRussa?)

And what of Alex Rodriguez? Is this his last game as a Yankee? Will he really be a member of the Cubs next year?

And more importantly…will the Yankees get some pitching? I mean, if you’re going to have to pay the luxury tax, at least spend your money on someone that can get the ball over the plate (especially if Clemens is done, and maybe Mussina as well).

So, I think we can add championships to the list of things that money can’t buy.

I think Torre did an amazing job of managing the game last night. He pulled Wang early, let Mussina pitch, and didn't allow Cleveland to pull away. He also seemed to keep his team poised. The Indians were just better, plain and simple.

Agreed... Torre should be praised for simply getting his team to the playoffs this year...

Torre should quit and save his sanity. The Yankees need to pick up better clutch pitching. They also need to get Clemans to go to Spring Training and play an entire season....if he comes back.

I agree -- he should resign, citing fatigue or something.

Agreed. Torre is a good manager. And you could argue that he didn't have to do anything because the Yankees always have/had so much talent, but on the other hand, it takes a great manager to be able to put all of those high paid egos together and still get them to play team ball (one season with Gary Sheffield aside)

Attention George: If we pride ourselves on the fact that the Yankees are a class act, then we need to reflect on the person who perpetuates that Class and grace and calm ability to deal with you. I believe Torre and Cashman did good things this season- Being a sore loser because a team and manager with lesser salaries beat us, is classless and poor sportsmanship- The Yankees have raised the bar and teams like the Indians have met the challenge- This series belonged to the Indians. They played better baseball- How is that Joe Torre's fault?

Once again, a player cannot be offered a contract with partial ownership of a franchise according to the bylaws of major league baseball...so can we stop with the asinine "A Rod's going to own the Cubs" stuff?

Yes I know the rule as well. You honestly think there aren't ways to get around that? You think MLB's bylaws are ironclad? I don't.
