Steinbrenner Steps Down!

by Tylersalt

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has reportedly handed over control of the team to his sons Hal and Hank, as reported by Yahoo! Sports. It is unclear how much of a change this will cause in the day-to-day operation of the Yankees, nor if this changes manager Joe Torre's situation. Steinbrenner seems to have made this decision as he has been faced with declining health.

Another report has been that the Yankees will possibly hire free-agent manager Tony LaRussa and see him as a two-year bridge to current bench coach Don Mattingly.

George will always have his finger on the Yankees, even from beyond the grave...

The thing is, this was something that has been in the making for quite a while now. I remember it being discussed on YES Netwrok during the new Yankee Stadium groundbreaking last year... as for the manager situation, it is more likely that Joe Torre will be back next season. WABC-TV had a report on this a couple of nights ago. If he doesn't return, having Tony LaRussa isn't a bad idea.

No matter what I think of the Yankees, I hope George's health doesn't continue to deteriorate.

I don't think that his sons are going to spend as much as George was willing too... Maybe this is that fall of the Yankees? Down With The New York Yankees...

Maybe spending less (and spending wiser) will be the way to get back to prominence. For all the hoopla and buzz the high-priced free agents draw, when the Yankees had that big run in the late 90s, it was guys like Derek Jeter, Paul O'Neill and Scoot Brosius who really put that team in high gear. If anything, I think the high-priced free agents -- and the plethora of stud prospects the organization has given up to get said free agents -- has set the organization back a bit. I don't think spending a certain amount matters. If it did, the Yankees would win every year. Which, if that happened, I'd be officially DONE with baseball.

As a Sox fan, I will miss George, he was a great antagonist, and the fact that he got results made things even better and more exciting. He was fun to hate, and say what you will but his re-investment into his team was good for baseball. How many owners just build enough excitement to sell tickets but have no desire to do what it takes to win, can you say Giants? Baseball will miss him. With him resigning baseball needs Mark Cuban even more as owner of the Cubs.

Nobody will ever accuse Steinbrenner of being cheap although he did show some fiscal restraint this year as he didn't go crazy signing free agents.

When I think of Steinbrenner I think of his ranting and raving on Seinfeld when George Costanza drove him crazy.

Turning over control means dealing with the business issues, as long as Boss George is breathing he's signing the checks and making the final decision on most everything. That said, it's Torre or Mattingly, the Yankees have zero interest in LaRussa.

Has anyone bothered checking to make sure Susie Waldman doesn't leap of Yankee Stadium's roof after this announcement?
