StayRod

I'm getting tired of all the speculation so let's end it for good, A-Rod is not leaving the Yankees. The speculation has become borderline hysteria. The reasons for him to leave border from somewhat reasonable: tired of the pressure of New York, tired of the media, tired of his wife..kidding, to total fantasy: he wants to follow in the footsteps of Barry Bonds and play in San Francisco, he wants to break the home run record with the Dodgers (huh?), and one genius columnist from New York surmises that he will end his career as a Marlin.......ok, try to breathe normally.

I hate to douse cold water on these great reasons for A-Rod to leave New York and I hate to be such a pessimist that a player may care about things other than the almighty dollar, but how many times does a player turn down the best offer? Almost never. So who thinks that the Yankees could ever be outbid? The Yankees cannot be outbid on a fair playing field but throw in the $30 million they are getting from Texas as part of the A-Rod trade and it will be impossible to outbid them. Let's say the Angels want to offer A-Rod 200 million for 7 years. Ok, the Yankees will tell A-Rod don't opt out and we'll extend you at 4 years for 120 million. The Yankees will pay him 50 over the next three years, then throw in the 30 mill from Texas and Alex ends up with a total of hhmm, 200 million. Plus, this leaves the Yankees on the hook for only 170 million. Heck, they can beat the Angels' offer by 30 million and still only have to match the Angels in what would actually come out of the Yankee coffers. This is such a huge advantage for the Yankees that no team will be able to make it up.

Should A-Rod really be concerned that he will be stuck on a last place team for the next 7 years? This is another ridiculous reason why he would leave the Yankees. Please, if any team can turn around a losing franchise faster than the Yankees tell me which that team is. The Yankees have gobs of money, they are loaded with pitching prospects and, contrary to what people may think, they are not locked in to a lot of aging players. Abreu is done this year, and Clemens is as well if he starts pitching more like his age. And any significant dropoff and/or injury to the Great Mariano or Posada and they don't have to be resigned either. After next year Pettitte, Mussina, Giambi and Pavano come off the payroll. That leaves you with Damon and Matsui as the only true underperforming veterans who are signed for 2009. As long as the Yankees spend their money wisely and hold onto the right prospects, they can turn it around fast. So let the crazy speculation continue, A-Rod will be Stay-Rod.

Don't quote me on this...but I recall hearing on WFAN in NYC that if the Yanks extend Arod, it's considered a new contract, and the Rangers are no longer on the hook for the 30 million. I suppose I should back up this claim with documented proof, but I'm lazy.

I think that's right. The CBA probably won't let the player or team rework a contract if it causes the contract's value to change. (That's why A-Rod isn't in Boston.) So for A-Rod to get more money before the current contract is up, he'd have to opt out of the current agreement. If it's a pure extension, then it wouldn't kick in until -- 2010? -- and he'd earn out the rest of the $252 MM contract until then.

Ok, so they would have to tell him not to opt out and handshake deal at 4 years and whatever million? So it wouldn't be an extension but I'm sure they can figure out a way to do it and continue to screw Texas at the same time. But thanks for the info.

haha, nice pean. I have to say, as awesome as the iphone is (or seems to be, i don't own one) there's no way it's worth 700 bucks and a $100/month service charge. Would be pretty sweet to have though.

ARod's contract has three years left at 81 million, with the Rangers on the hook for 29 million. His opt out clause kicks in on November 10, if he opts out he voids the last three years. Any contract he subsequently signs would be effective the day he signs it, so its not an extension but an entirely new deal.

The contract is only an extension if the Yankees resign him, because he is Yankee property, they own the contract.

This whole conversation is moot anyway because ARod is gone. There is ZERO chance he stays in New York.

When was the last time the Yankees let talent go because of dollars? Particularly productive talent? They've let players go because of getting more talent, because the player's skills were diminishing, but when has it been simply over dollars?

Conversely, ARod chased the dollars earlier in his career and had a big swig of playing for a loser. There aren't many teams/markets that can afford to pay him market rate (Yankee money) and have enough left in the coffers to put out a competitive product.

He'll stay a Yankee because the alternative is to likely go back to being highly paid on a losing team, and people thinking "A-who?"

What has he won in New York?

It's not just about winning and money. A-Rod needs to be loved, and he isn't getting it in NY.

Hello, Cubbies.

When you have 250 million and another 200 million on the way, "Yankee" dollars don't matter. There is one thing ARod wants more than a World Series ring, and that is to go down in history as the best shortstop ever. Even if Jeter drops dead tomorrow, ARod won't play short in New York. Hence, his desire to leave.

Uh...how do you know that? Why are you so sure that A-Rod wants so badly to go down as the best shortstop ever? I personally expect him to stay with the Yankees, but he could leave...from what I've heard, though, he doesn't have the range to play good SS anymore.

Do you know that this past offseason ARod worked out six hours a day? Almost every day? At shortstop? Do you know why? Because he had already made the decision to leave. If he wanted to stay, why play short in your workouts? If he wanted to leave and stay at third, or even move to first, why work out at short?

ARod is in the best condition of his life, and its all in preparation to leave New York, sign a big deal somewhere else...as a shortstop.

If you have any spare change lying around, go to Vegas and bet it all on ARod leaving.

Arod is a giant, corporate douchebag. The only things he cares about are his image and his checkbook. And manly-looking strippers!

And with his soon to be ex wife on the hook for half his checkbook, all the more reason to opt out and get a new deal.
