Statistics vs Results

GW mens soccer has struggled a little since the NCAA season a few years back. Among the unsettled is a goalkeeper competition between two juniors who are competing for the position vacated by outgoing Derek Biss who led the Colonials to several winning seasons.

One is a highly recruited player, whose statistics are highlighted after each game, despite accumulating a 4-8-2 record this past season. The other, a less recruited junior, is nearly overlooked despite a 1-1-1 record in his three starts. I suspect that a poll among the colonial players will indicate pretty clearly in which player they have most confidence.

Gaudy statistics are ways of distractiong attention from real issues, like won-lost records. When do results take precedence over statistics and the team be given its best chance of succeeding? We al make errors in judgement. It takes a real leader to admit when its time to effect a change. Sports a mirror of life? How ironic !!

This is pretty common everywhere. Doesn't make it right, but you see teams sticking with underacheivers all the time, simply because of the price the team paid to get the player or, in college terms, the player's pre-matriculation reputation.
