The Friedenator Prediction Center ("FPC") in Philadelphia, PA, on this day, June 22, 2006, is calling the winner of the 2006 NL East. The winner of this baseball division is the New York Mets. As of the end of MLB play today, the Mets record stands at 45 wins and 27 losses. This record currently places the Mets 10 full games ahead of the second place club in the division, the Philadelphia Phillies. Actually, the Mets are the only team in the entire division above .500.
As far as the Phillies, they really do not have much to look forward to for the rest of the season. The team lacks starting pitching, a third baseman, and a catcher. In addition, the Phils have a manager, Charlie Manuel who is simply above his head being an MLB manager.
Besides the Phillies and Mets, the NL East includes the Washington Nationals, Florida Marlins, and Atlanta Braves. Historically, the Braves have owned this division. However, as it has been mentioned elsewhere, the Braves glorious run is finally over. While the Braves are still heading toward rock bottom, the Marlins have already turned that corner and have their rebuilding project in full throttle. It does pay to go through a fire sale during the off-season. And finally the Nationals who, er. . . well, at least MLB has gotten this club a new, private owner!
So with that said, the Mets, by being in the worse division in baseball, can start spreading the playoffs news to their fans. Whether this is a good thing or not, especially when your closer is Billy Wagner, is yet to be determined.
