The Dallas Stars defeated the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 at American Airlines Center on Monday Night. After falling behind twice in the game, the Stars rallied twice to take leads, ultimately taking the final lead as forward Antti Miettinen scored the game winning goal.
Notes:
Fast Start Again:
Colorado got off to a fast start again, as Marek Svatos (A Stars Killer) scored the first two goals of the game within the first seven minutes of the contest.
The Avalanche got off to the same start during the season opener as they scored two goals in the first 20 minutes in Denver.
The Stars won both game versus the Avalanche this season, but their starts are less then to be desired.
Mike Smith Saves The Day:
Stars backup goaltender Mike Smith relieved Marty Turco, who gave up two goals on the only five shots he faced in the game on Monday Night.
For the night, Smith made 16 saves in relief and earned some respect, coming into a game with the Avalanche and giving the Stars a chance to win the game.
As for Turco.... The curse against the Av's continues as he allowed another fast start while he was in net......
Special Teams:
In a rarity in the New NHL, Colorado won 2-1 in the special teams department, but failed to win the game. In the end, the even strength of the Stars was just enough to beat the Avalanche.
Injury Problems:
Coming Into the Game, Steve Ott (Ankle) was the only injury concern.
Yet, Jere Lehtinen was a scratch (Lower Body Injury) on Monday Night.
Then, Brenden Morrow left the game in the 2nd period with a groin injury, finishing his night after he powered the Stars offense in the 1st period with two goals.
Combine Ott, Lehtinen, Morrow and add Jaroslav Modry who was a healthy scratch and the lineup will be tested as players seem to be breaking down....
Just another problem for the Stars to deal with.......
Slump Busted:
With the Stars scoring 14 goals in 3 days, their slump from last week has been eliminated.
In tonight's game, they scored on the power play and even strength, giving the offense more of a balance.
Also, Morrow, Sergeri Zubov, Eric Lindros and Antti Miettinen powered the offense when the Avalanche looked to run away with the game early......
Rail Cam:
In a clear reaction to the NFL Broadcasts and how Video Games are played, Versus unveiled the Rail Cam, a camera that slides along a track places on the top of the glass on the near boards.
At first, the camera does little during live action. Offsides plays are hard to see and the play seems jumpy.
Yet, on replays , the camera does give detail that helps to tell the story.
My take: Keep the camera but I'll bet that you will see it in more applications than replay, which might require some dramamine....
