Stanley Cup Finals Game 1: Caveman Comes to the Rescue

9
Vote

In what is turning out to be one of the best Stanley Cup Playoffs in history, the Carolina Hurricanes came back from a 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to take Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals 5-4.

Rod Brind'Amour, captain of the Hurricanes, scored the second of his two goals with less than a minute remaining in the game. Carolina's goalie Cam Ward then stoned the Edmonton Oilers on several chances in the closing seconds of the game.

The Oilers did not only lose Game 1 of the series last night. Their goalie, Dwayne Roloson, suffered a Series-ending knee injury in the third period. This injury could have taken any chance the over-acheiving Oilers had of winning the series against the much more talented Hurricanes.

Sounds good... The Oilers are still in with a shout. Pronger is a great defenseman, and if he hits form, he could make life very difficult for Carolina.

I can't believe how that game ended and I'm still not sure if it was the goalies fault or just bad luck.

That game had everything: a penalty shot (scored on by a defenseman, no less); a furious comeback by the home team; a brief rally by the Oilers to tie it at 4; and a game-winner with less than a minute to play in regulation! I feel bad for Conklin, too, though -- that was kind of a freak play at the end. If Roloson hadn't gotten injured, this series could have been really exciting (especially based on the action in Game 1), but Edmonton has a huge hill to climb now.

It was a good game, but I don't think you can call it one of the best Stanley Cup Playoffs in history after only one game. If Roloson wasn't out, it might be more exciting, since Roloson is done for the series, the rest of the series won't be anywhere near as good as game one.
