Stackhouse Stays.....

In the Metroplex sports world where the off-season theme seems to be, " Let's Not Shake These Teams Up Too Much", Jerry Stackhouse and the Dallas Mavericks agreed to a three year deal.

Now, this move signals a couple things:

1. The Mavericks wanted Stackhouse to stay after last season where he was in the running for the NBA 6th man award.

2. Stackhouse couldn't find a team that could contend for a title and had a spot for him as a starter, not a bench player. If you read the article from SI about NBA 6th men, Stackhouse was quoted as stating that as much as he liked coming off the bench, he would love to start.

-Thus, I thought he was gone after the Warriors eliminated the Mavs in April. If you followed the current trends in the NBA, you would think an Eastern Conference Team would have pressed for Stack's services, especially after that article came out. Yet, he stays, showing that his best option was with the Mavericks.

Stackhouse re-signing with the Mavericks is a good one, as it gives the Mavericks a great 6th man and a guy who can start games when injuries change the makeup of the roster. Yet, I would still like to see another point guard on the roster before the pre-season starts in October.

Remember: As much as I'd like to see Devin Harris play all 48 minutes of regulation, that isn't realistic. Plus, the current options on the bench are Maurice Ager and JJ Barea who spent the majority of this past season in the D League. Unless both Ager and Barea improve dramatically, a veteran point guard needs to be brought in in order to provide stability and depth, especially if Harris goes into foul trouble this upcoming season, which happened a few games during the regular season and during the 1st round series vs. the Warriors.

A three year deal for Stackhouse, at this stage of his career, seems to be a little much, don't you think?

For the player, getting a long term deal isn't a big deal.

For the team, you just hope it doesn't create a roster with players who are past their prime.

At this point, I would think Dallas had to give Stack a three year deal in order to keep him.... Or else, someone else would have given him a three year deal....

Just for the record, Barea and Ager didn't spend the majority of last season in the D league. Barea spent one week there - and was Player of the Week!! He had two 40+ point games that week. Also, Ager isn't a point guard.

I think JJ's stats this summer are proving him to be worthy of at least another year with the Mavs. This year, though, he should get more playing time because he has been fantastic in the Summer League thus far.
