The Pittsburgh Pirates went into their April 11th game attempting to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Cardinals. The matchup featured the Pirates' Paul Maholm(0-1) and the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright(1-0).

The Cardinals started hot right out of the gates. David Eckstein and So Taguchi each hit singles to leadoff the game, but the Cardinals failed to make anything of the threat.

Outside of a Chris Duffy triple in the bottom of the third, the first three innings went by without many offensive highlights.

The Pirates struck first in the bottom of the fourth. Xavier Nady and Jose Bautista both singled before C Humberto Cota singled in Brad Eldred, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

The Cardinals did not wait long to deliver the counter-punch. The next half-inning began with an Aaron Miles leadoff walk. Wainwright sacrificed him over to second and Eckstein singled Miles home to knot the game at 1 run apiece. Taguchi doubled to put runners on second and third for Albert Pujols. The Pirates chose to intentionally walk Pujols in favor of Scott Spiezio. Maholm recorded the second out of the inning on a Spiezio strikeout. Unfortunately for Pittsburh, Preston Wilson hit an infield single to score a run before Maholm struck out Jim Edmonds to end the inning.

Freddy Sanchez hit a sac fly in the seventh to tie the game at two.

With the game tied at 2 in the ninth, the Pirates brought in closer Salomon Torres to hold the Cardinals offense. With one out, Chris Duncan drove Torres' pitch out to center to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.

The Pirates failed to score in the bottom of the ninth, falling to St. Louis 3-2.

Game Notes:

  • Ryan Franklin recorded his first win of the year.
  • Chris Duncan's HR was the second of the year for him.
  • Chris Duffy went 3-4.
