The Pittsburgh Pirates started off the month of August on the right track, beating the St. Louis Cardinals in every asset of the game. The Bucs did it all, and it showed in the final score of 15-1.
First off, pitching. Tony Armas(1-3) came out to get his first win of the season. He was in the rotation to start the season, but after a shaky start went to the bullpen, and put on a great showing in his first start since. His stats looked like this: 6.1IP, 4 Hits, 1 Earned Run, 1BB, 5SO. The game was finished off by John Grabow, Damaso Marte, and Matt Capps.
The Cards didn't do so well, and may have been doomed from the start when Braden Looper(8-9) let up 5 runs in the 1st inning. the relief work for St. Louis included Brad Thompson, Mike Maroth, and Troy Percival.
The bats were definitely kicking for the Buccos. It started in the first where after Nate McClouth and Jose Bautista both grounded out, the rest of the team combined for 5 runs, which were highlighted by a Ronny Paulino grand slam. In the third Adam LaRoche hit his 15th long ball of the season. In the 6th, Jack Wilson, who also singled in Jason Bay in the 3rd, hit his 5th homer of the year on a solo shot. If it wasn't already over, the bucs ended it in the 8th when they put up 7 more runs.
While the Cardinals didn't have much of a chance in this game due to their defense, the offense didn't help either. The only run came in the 6th inning when Aaron Miles hit his 1st home run of the season off of Tony Armas.
Well there it is, a one-sided battle that looked very promising for the Pirates. They showed a lot of power and great defense as they try to make one more run at the playoffs before it is too late as they are 14 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central and 13.5 games back to the Dodgers in the NL Wild Card.
