Spurrier and Company Getting Raises: But Why?

Does the South Carolina coaching staff really deserve a raise.
Does the South Carolina coaching staff really deserve a raise.

Yesterday, it was announced that Steve Spurrier and seven of his eight returning assistant coaches at the University of South Carolina will be receiving new contracts with higher salaries. Recruiting coordinator David Reaves also got a twenty-five percent raise.

For me, it is hard to figure out why they are all getting raises. What has Spurrier and his assistants done so far as to deserve a raise in salary. So far, Spurrier has just taken the Gamecocks to subpar bowl games such as the Independence Bowl.

I am not saying that he is a poor coach or anything. Look at his track record, multiple SEC Championships and a National Title at Florida. I think he has a good chance of turning South Carolina into a consistant challenger for the SEC crown. However, he really hasn't done anything at South Carolina to prove to me that he and his assistants are worthy of a raise.

However, I understand why he was given an extension. In the modern era of College Football everything is driven by money. The BCS is in place because of money. Notre Dame does not belong to a conference because of the money. It is all because of the money. Universities pay large sums of money to hire coaches away from other school.

So Spurrier gets a raise because the prices of head coaches and College Football related positions are increasing. The coach at one school gets his salary doubled so South Carolina has to give their coaches a raise.

So Spurrier doesn't really get a raise because he and his coaches deserve it. He gets a raise because many of the other coaches and schools are just getting even more money. You gotta love College Football.

Spurrier hasnt won a national title in SC yet, but he has changed that program. SC was typically a laughing stock of the SEC despite having a strong fan base.Spurrier has brought a winning attitude to the program. Also remember this is a program that was mared in crap in the final years of Holtz being there. Also remember Spurrier did talk with Alabama about there job. Great bargining move on his part. He forced SC's hand to give him a raise, not every coach can do that.

Of course it is great for Spurrier, but has he really earned a raise? It's kinda like me being a UPS guy. Other postal service workers at FedEx are getting increases because they have earned the raise. Other coaches like Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer are getiing raises because they deserve them. Because the FedEx guy gets a raise, UPS all of a sudden thinks that they have to give me a raise, although I have just been an average worker. The UPS guy is like Spurrier in this case.

I'm with BigPPup on this one. Your comment is like saying, "unless you've won a national title, you have just been average at your job." That doesn't quite add up to me. If you've brought a program from laughing stock of its conference and having an awful reputation (toward the end of Holtz's reign) to a very respectable team and a competitor, you've done a pretty decent job so far. Didn't USC come within a point or two of beating Florida last season? If they'd won that game, would Spurrier be deserving of his raise? Would Meyer not be deserving?

Okay, going to the Independence Bowl is sweet and deserves a raise! Awesome! Common that is one of the worst bowl games.

from the craphole that they were in, it kinda does. I think it actually gets televised, which makes it somewhat notable

Look, if you wanted to argue that Spurrier and other college football coaches are overpaid (Saban, etc.), I might jump on board. Your argument is that if you don't win the whole thing, you're ... ? Overrated? Mediocre? Not doing a good job? In your opinion, only Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel deserve raises? I'm confused...

Maybe I am not explaining it well. You don't have to win it all to deserve a raise. Randy Walker deserved a raise at Northwestern. He led them to a share of the Big Ten title in 2000. While at Michigan this wouldn't be celebrated at NU it is. You don't have to win it all to get a raise, but you should max out the potential of your school's team. Getting a share of the Big 10 for Northwestern is maxing out their potential because they are a small private school with high academic standards. That is as good as they can get. South Carolina is a large state public school. It is between Florida, Georgia and the deep south and the Mid-Atlantic. Both are recruiting hot beds. The potential at South Carolina is a lot higher than just the Independence Bowl. Its like giving a reward for not finishing the job. Walker finished the job.

but there's a difference between 10 AM on ESPNU and a normal time on ESPN 2. A hotbead? Yes, but they also have Georgia, Florida, Texas, LSU, and Alabama in the area, all are programs with a long history

Spurrier has done exactly that with SC, that is a team that 5 years ago only won 2-3 games a year, and now they average 8-4. Id say that a big jump. Teams have to get up to play SC now, and no longer schedule them for homecoming. SC has never won an SEC title. They had never beaten Tennessee till Spurrier got there. They have never been to the SEC title game in ATL. So they are barely a step above Northwestern, and now they are a competitive team.
