Spud Davis (Virgil Lawrence Davis) was born on December 20, 1904 in Birmingham, Alabama. He made his Major League debut on April 30, 1928 for the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1928, his rookie year, he hit .280 with 3 home runs and 19 RBI. Davis played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 16 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Spud Davis's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1932, when he hit for a .336 average and knocked in 70 runs. However, others believe that it was 1933, when he hit for a .349 average and knocked in 65 runs.
