Born on September 12, 1907 in Commerce, Georgia, Spud Chandler (Spurgeon Ferdinand Chandler) played for the New York Yankees for his entire 11 year career. Chandler broke into the bigs on May 6, 1937 with the New York Yankees, and put up a 2.84 ERA in 82.1 innings pitched in 1937, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Spud Chandler's best season was 1943, when he posted a 1.64 ERA, won 20 games and struck out 134 batters.
