Spring Notes (USC)

Spring is in the air! USC Football practice has been going on for the past few weeks so here are seven of my most astute observations on how practice is going.
7. The Shotgun may be helpful. Last year John David Booty struggled at times with defenders knocking the ball down at the line of scrimmage. By using a shotgun formation every so often, this may become less of an issue.
6. Trojans need a Kicker! The Trojans need a kicker. With Mario Danelo's death and Troy Van Blarcom leaving the school, the Trojans will definately need a solid kicker. David Buehleris getting the chance to be that guy. If you can recall, Buehler, nailed a 47 yard field goal against California last season. If Buehler, a walk-on, can fill the shoes of Danelo than the Trojans should be okay at kicker.
5. Patrick Turner is definately the number one receiver. Turner is the most experienced of the group and has put on a good showing so far. Turner has peformed well in various drills and has scored some touchdwons in scrimmages. Last year, he was the number three receiver behind Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith. While his playing time was limited, he still managed to perform well, grabbing a touchdown against Arkansas and catching over ten passes against Washington.
4. The Local Papers aren't covering practice. Well, they are covering practice, but not daily or even every other day. It seems as if the Los Angeles area is preoccupied with other sporting events, March Madness and Opening Day. Scott Wolf's Blog and the Daily Trojan are the only sources covering Spring Practice daily.
3. Passing Game is Shacky. Booty has been so-so throughout camp and Mark Sanchez has also been decent. Both guys will need to be a lot better come Fall practice, considering that the receiving group is very young.
2. Hershel Dennis is making a nice comeback. This will be Dennis's sixth season as a Trojan. In 2003, he started over Reggie Bush and LenDal White. Dennis has suffered through injuries and suspensions, but he is now looking to log some serious playing time. Most Trojan Fans, especially me, would love to see him make a full recovery.
1. Jamere Holland is looking to be the number two receiver. With Patrick Turner already taking the number one job, Holland looks to be a likely canidate for the other starting receiver spot. Holland is known for his speed and agility. He could be a great compliment to the taller Turner.
