Sports Trivia for the Hell of it

by Silencer76

Since this has gone on a bit, and since I enjoy sports trivia, probably more than most, I figured I would come up with a series myself, with this being the first installment. So that said, here we go:

Question 1: Who am I? I played seven years in the major leagues and my batting average dropped every season, from .321 in my rookie year to .128 at the end. I am not a pitcher.

Answer: Dave Stapleton of the Boston Red Sox

Question 2: Who am I? I am the only pitcher to win a batting title.

Answer: Guy Hecker, who hit .342 in 1886 for Louisville in the American Association. (answered by Jut, or was it his dad? lol)

Question 3: Three players hit as many home runs at home as they did on the road in their major league careers. Hint: none of these three played after 1959.

Question 4: Two players played for both the 1972 Dolphins, who were undefeated (17-0) and also suffered by playing for the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-14). Who are they?

Answer: Larry Ball and Maulty Moore (Answered by Steel Town)

Question 5: The longest game in NHL history went to a sixth overtime. Who were the teams involved, the goaltenders, and who scored the winner?

Answer: Detroit 1, Montreal Maroons 0...goal scored by Mud Bruneteau, goaltenders Normie Smith (DET) and Lorne Chabot (MTL) answered by MJD

Question 6: Who were the pitchers that pitched the longest stint in one major league game, in a game that was called by darkness with the score tied at 1?

Answer: Leon Cadore and Joe Oeschger in 1920 (answered by Kelsdad)

Question 7: In 1987, the NHL record for two fastest goals in a game was set. What teams were involved, and who tallied the goals?

Answer: The Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues. Ken Linseman tallied for Boston at 19:50 of the third period. Doug Gilmour answered with a goal of his own at 19:52.

Question 8: Who am I? I was the only dead player selected to an All Star Team.

Answer: Pelle Lindbergh of the Philadelphia Flyers (answered by Kelsdad)

Question 9: Only one outfielder has ever started three double plays in one game, and each runner he gunned down represented the tying run. Who is it?

Answer: Jack McCarthy of the Chicago Cubs in 1905 (answered by Kelsdad)

Question 10: What team are we? In the same season, we boasted a team average of .315, had 8 .300 hitters, a major league record ERA of 6.71, our defense committed 239 errors, and we finished 40 games out of first. Hint: This was before 1950.

Answer: 1930 Philadelphia Phillies (answered by Jut)

Question 11: Whose major league record did White Sox closer Bobby Jenks tie when he retired 41 consecutive batters earlier this season?

Answer: Jim Barr of the San Francisco Giants in 1971. (Answered by Hit by a Pitch)

Question 12: What team owns the NHL record for consecutive games without a loss, and how many games did they go?

Answer: 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers, 35 games, 25-0-10 (answered by Jut)

Question 13: Who is the one of four major leaguers in modern history to steal five bases in a game? For a bonus, who stole six in a game to set the modern day record?

Answer: Rickey Henderson is one of the four to steal five bags in a game. (thanks to MJD for finding that, it was missed in my first sweep, hence the rewrite)

So there you have it, a first installment of trivia. Feel free to answer and I will keep track of who answers the most correct as we go along.

According to the books and research I have done, Rickey Henderson is NOT the answer. If you can show me the box score that has him stealing five bags in a game, I will amend the question.

On July 29, 1989, Henderson stole 5 bases against the Seattle Mariners' left-handed Randy Johnson, his career high, and one shy of the single-game MLB record. Unusually, Henderson was 0-0 in the game (he had four walks). http://en.wi...ey_Henderson

#5 is the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Maroons but I don't know the players involved
  1. 7 I am not following the question. The two fastest goals by one player was Mike Knuble of the Flyers in 2003. I believe it was against the Panthers. If you are asking for just the two fastest goals overall I think there was 2 seconds between goals. I think Dougie Gimlour scored one into an empty net.

5 was the Maroons and Red Wings in 1936. Mud Bruneteau scored the winner in the sixth overtime. As for question 7...I am looking for the teams and goalscorers in the contest where the NHL record for fastest two goals were scored. Not scored by an individual, just the fastest two goals in a game.

I'm not sure what your definition of "modern day" is, but I count 10 players since 1973 who have stolen five bases in a game, and two who have stolen six. Alex Cole did it twice, plus Damian Jackson, Amos Otis, Kenny Lofton, Davey Lopes, Ryan Freel, Bert Campaneris, Alan Wiggins, Lonnie Smith, Tony Gwynn. Otis Nixon and Eric Young have each stolen six bases in a game.
