German superstar, Michael Schumacher, has won seven World Championships. His career has been dogged by controversy. In 1994, he famously knocked Damon Hill off the track to stop him winning the championship. He tried the same thing in 1997, but it backfired. This year, in his latest controversy, he "parked" his car during a Grand Prix. (I.e. he put his car on the track so no others could get past to complete a lap faster than his qualifying lap) What was the name of the Grand Prix?
A: German Grand Prix, B: Monaco Grand Prix, C: United States Grand Prix, D: British Grand Prix Answer: B: Monaco Grand Prix.

Question 5
The German Grand Prix is a few weeks away. The Nurburgring, in Germany, has already hosted a Grand Prix this year. What was the name of the Grand Prix?
A: Nuremburg Grand Prix, B: European Grand Prix, C: German Grand Prix (West), D: German Grand Prix (East)

A: Uwe Krupp, B: Igor Larionov, C: Mathieu Schneider, D: Dominik Hasek
Answer: A: Uwe Krupp. The only German in the possible answers!

Question 8
Where did the Germans come in the 2006 Winter Olympic Medals Table?
A: First, B: Second, C: Third, D: Fourth
Answer: A: First. Norway, the usual winners, had arguably their worst Winter Olympics ever. The Germans won 29 medals, 11 of which were gold.

Tennis

Question 9
There was no German tournament winner at Wimbledon. But who was the last German to win a Singles Grand Slam?
A: Boris Becker, B: Steffi Graf, C: Goran Ivanesevic, D: Stefan Edberg
Answer: B: Steffi Graf. Ivanesevic did win Wimbledon in 2001, later than all the others, but he is not German!

Sports History

Question 10
What was the last German club to win the UEFA Champions' League?
A: Bayer Leverkusen, B: Bayern Munich, C: Borussia Dortmund, D: Borussia Monchengladbach
Answer: B: Bayern Munich, in 2001. They beat Valencia, of Spain 1-1 and 5-4 on penalties.

Question 11
Amazingly, no German owned team has ever won the Formula One Constructors' Championship. What was the last German engine supplier to win the World Championship?
A: Porsche, B: Mercedes, C: BMW, D: Audi
Answer: B: Mercedes, as McLaren-Mercedes in 1998. Before then, in 1984 and 1985, McLaren-TAG-Porsche won the title. Amazing to think that one of the best car production companies in the world has never won the F1 Constructors' Championship. However, this was due to the Mercedes boycott of Motor Sport after the Le Mans disaster, in 1955.

Alex, the question with ivanisevic was very confusing. I looked up his most recent title, and I knew he was croation, but I assumed he had obtained german citizenship, or why else would you put him on the list? Not a big deal at all, but it definitely through me off.

Trick question! I knew that you may look it up, so I started putting tricks in to stop you/help you get it wrong. No, you aren't allowed to, but people do because they cheat. Shame really.

No. Don't look things up. It's a shame some people have to, but if you believe in a moral victory, then you're fine. No cheating everybody. There's no way I know, granted, but you will ruin it for the people that are honest.

I wouldn't know a single answer if not for looking up answers. If that's what we're doing, I'll have to bow out. I don't know European sports at all.

You can just guess, as I presume the people towards the bottom two do. I'm guessing most of you don't know the answers to those - the idea is that you guess. Also, most of the stuff I ask is on here, so if you looked around articles, you'd find the answers in most cases. It's mainly a comprehension test. That is the idea - I write about 80% of the questions, having read them already on here.

Alex, maybe you should bump up a North American quiz. That might get more people involved.

I guessed on all but two or three and that's only because the World Cup stuff that was in headlines. I still think I should have gotten a bonus point since I've been to Germany :-)

There are two planned... one in October and one in November. There is a link to the schedule on my user page. Do you suggest another "Non-Championship" quiz, either this weekend or next? (I think that a part of the lack of involvement is down to the fact it is published on a Sunday and Monday).
