Sports Pet Peeve: How 'bout those Derek Jeters?

One of my biggest pet peeves in the sports world is when those talking about sports refer to a player in a plural entity. Such as: There is a small group of players, your Derek Jeters, your Travis Hafners, your Barry Zitos that are just something special."
Why do they make the names plural? There's only one of them. Who created this ridiculous way of forming a sentence?
It’s not like it’s the The Island and there’s a bunch of Barry Zito clones hanging out with Scarlett Johansson waiting to take the place of the real one if he has to go on the DL. (Although maybe the Chicago Cubs should look into that for Mark Prior and Kerry Wood.)
Why not just say Jeter, Hafner and Zito are special players? It says the exact same thing and it makes a lot more sense.
Am I the only one that this bothers?
