Sports Mechanics: Fixing the Games

by Ron Sen, MD

We know from the Tim Donaghy scandal that at least one professional sport has tainted officiating. You wonder about other sub rosa skullduggery. Michael Jordan switched to baseball for a year. Was there any gambling issue?

Today's Patriots-Colts game has got to be raising eyebrows.

  • An early call where the receiver is clearly out of bounds, with both officials looking right at the play
  • An Ellis Hobbs pass interference call setting up a Colts' score
  • Offensive pass interference in the endzone on Randy Moss

This detracts from a terrific game and a great effort by the Colts' defense.

It makes you wonder.

1. That early call was overturned so is useless in the long run. This game was not fixed, their were some examples of tough calls but not as bad as some other calls throughout the year. The announcers even pointed out that the officiating crew had a high propensity for calling pass interference.

I don't think the game was fixed, but this particular crew is prone to calling penalties on the road team. Also, the crew chief is the most challenged official (third in overturned calls). Great team to have officiate this match up.
