Sports Illustrated - Bruce Bowen Plays Clean Defense; Video Evidence to the Contrary

4
Vote

I just finished Marty Burns’ Sports Illustrated.com piece on Bruce Bowen. My assessment? Burns needs to get his straw out of Frau David Stern’s behind. The article, entitled, The dirt on Bowen: Does Spurs’ stopper cross the line with feisty defense? alleges to objectively discuss Bowen’s league-wide reputation for dirty defensive play, particularly sticking his foot under jump shooters while they’re in the air.

I was at the Knicks/Spurs game when the Francis incident happened, pretty close to court side thanks to my friend's corporate lawyer. Bowen DEFINITELY got in underneath him on purpose. No questions.

Better about the game was that I got to wear the shirt below, and Marbury looked right at it:

I voted cause of the shirt; classic stuff. I wonder if Steve & Barry's would sell those along with Starbury's sneakers....

I guess you could see the shirt thing as a plug, but where's the other one? And I did really wear the Ballhog shirt.

I dont doubt that you wore it. (Its a great shirt by the way). Also gave you cred for shouting out your friend, and his corporate lawyer. Big ups to him for giving out the tickets

Yeah, and everyone in the NBA travels, carries the ball, and whines too much. The NBA is dead, don't let it waste your time.

BTW - Looking at these comments spurred me to add something to the end of the blog hit I wrote on Marty Burns and "Brucey Big Foot" - and here it is:

Bowen is a punk, right along with "Mr. Anger Management" Raja Bell. When I think about it, the Burns article are basically saying that peeps are just Bowen haters, just like they're Bell haters. But I don't ever remember anyone calling Alvin Robertson or Dennis Johnson dirty. and they're perhaps two of the greatest lock-down defenders in the modern NBA.

All told, Bowen is a bitch with no real game to speak of and Burns is just trying to keep the NBA contacts he deems valuable.

No game to speak of? Look, you might not like the way he plays, but the people who consider him a good defender aren't idiots.

Oh, and your criticism of Burns' motives is just as off-base as your criticism of Bowen's.

I've got a few comments about the videos you put up. First of all, you accuse Bowen of trying to end Francis' career. Now, I'm not going to defend Bowens tactics and say it's just hard-nosed basketball. It is dirty. But, none of us has room to speak to people's motives. You don't know that Bowen is trying to injure people, anymore than I know that Bowen is just trying to intimidate them.

Your Ray Allen video does nothing to show Bowen's defensive tactics, which is supposedly the point of your article. It shows him losing his cool after Ray Allen leaned into him on a jump shot. Of course, you say nothing about Ray Allen's tactics, only Bowen's.

Thirdly, in the video that you say shows Bowen at his worst, you don't comment on the fact that Carter threw his elbow at Bowen's face on the play, or comment on their head-contact exchance earlier in the game. You just point out what appears to me to be them getting tangled up and call it dirty. Now, you can have your beef with the refs giving a technical only to Vince Carter. I would, too. But your analysis is not unbiased in any way. You clearly have something against Bowen, and it is shading your perception of his run-ins with other players.

Nice and baseless stuff, A Swaff. How do you know Burns' motives? The manner in which the article was written can only lead me to surmise that Burns had a specific agenda for writing his article - which is to protect Bowen, the people he contacted for the article, and his relationship with them. Again, if Burns was writing an article with a true interest in exploring whether or no Bowen is a dirty player, he would have included quotes from players and coaches who see Bowen as dirty. He would have allowed them to provide explicit examples of Bowen's actions, which only an opposing player or coach can, since they're the people on the floor when the shit is going down.

Now, I have nada against Brucey Big Foot, except that a well-placed foot under someone in the air can irreparably tear ankle tendons, thus ruining a career, I've seen it happen. Whether that's Bowen's intention or not, that his actions can ruin a career speak for themselves.

The Allen video was included to show how Bowen's actions fly in the face of Burns' stretch of an assertion (largely through Spurs player's quotes) that Bowen is one of the nicest guys in the league.

And as far as the, "them just getting tangled up" b.s., here's what actually happens in the the crucial sequence of the Vince Carter vid: at the :44 mark in the vid, Bowen hacks Carter. At the :45 mark, Bowen smacks Carter in the face. At the :46 mark Bowen hand-checks Carter. At the :47 mark Bowen, reaches in, grabbing Carter's arm. Carter's move directly thereafter is not an elbow, but a ball-swing. The only elbow above Bowen's chest is Carter's right elbow which is farthest from Bowen's body. At the :48 mark Bowen performs his, "I just got shot" jump back move in an attempt to elicit an offensive foul call from the ref; almost simultaneously Carter swings his left arm across Bowen's chest. At the :49 mark V.C. rises up for his jumper - at this point in the vid Bowen is a good three feet away from Carter. By the :51 mark the ref has finally fully crossed the path of Bowen and Carter. You can plainly see where Bowen, from three feet away has landed - directly under Carter, his right leg in Carter's landing path. However, before that at the :50 mark, it is clear that Bowen has landed in Carter's landing area and is sticking his ass into V.C.'s body, causing Carter to begin his fall backward. Between the :50 and :52 marks you can see Bowen, after "booping" Carter, takes two quick hops back into Carter's body, ensuring that V.C. will hit the deck. Bowen then appears to trip over a "floor monster" making it appear that V.C. has heinously tripped him, when in fact, Carter's feet are at least six inches, if not a foot from Bowen.

If I were Carter, I'd be pissed too.

I don't know Burns' motives. That's exactly my point. Neither of us knows Burns' motives. So, to say that he's doing this for one reason or another is unfair and absurd.

"Whether that's Bowen's intention or not, that his actions can ruin a career speak for themselves."

They can ruin a career? Have they? That's like saying that Karl Malone's kick on his fadeaways could have landed on someone's crotch, rendering them sterile. Certainly, blows to the crotch have rendered some sterile. It's an unfair accusation to make.

My point isn't to defend Bowen or to defend the article. I don't know the writer, and I haven't read the article, so I can't speak to it's bias. I'm just saying that you obviously have a beef with Bowen, and I think it's leading you to an equally unfair assessment of his play.

Oh, well, if he was there, he couldn't possibly be wrong! I retract my statement. Give me a break. Your comments are completely without merit. You just hate Bowen. You could have just said that you think Bowen is a punk and spared yourself a lot of useless writing.
