Sports Greatest Records…Which Ones Will Stand and Fall? Inspired by Balco Bonds

On the verge of witnessing one of the most hollowed records in all of sports fall as Barry Bonds currently stands with 751 home runs, four behind Aaron, got me to thinking. I know, that’s a very dangerous thought indeed! No matter what anybody feels towards this rooting for Barry Bonds to become the home run champion, eventually it’s going to happen. Yeah, Ruth may have done it on beer and hot dogs…Hammerin Hank did it with class and dignity. And now Barry will have done it with needles & syringes…Or is that the Cream & the Clear. Look, Barry can say until he’s blue in the face that he’s never dabbled in the “performance enhancing” industry, but we know better…It’s all in the hat size my man! All in the hat size…Um, excuse me Barry, what’s your reason behind that? Your Viagra miss fire? In fact it doesn’t have to even be that scientific…All that’s needed is a collection of Balco Barry’s baseball cards over the years for proof. For photos, well, they never lie!

Nevertheless some time in this year’s season half one of sports most cherished records will be surpassed…Whether it has an asterisk by it or not is in the eyes of the beholder! Everyone of us has heard the slogan, “Records were made to be broken” and as sports enthusiasts we understand the importance of this. Remember where we were and what we were doing as an all-time record falls…And thus will be the case again sometime this summer.

Sports are a plethora of records…For they come on so many different scales. The one that Bonds is about to surpass is again one of sports most cherished records. Thus begs the question, since Major League Baseball is on the verge of having a new All-Time Home Run king , what are some of the other treasured records in sports? The records in which we think are so unattainable and will never be broken…Then again, we had this same thought regarding Hammerin Hank’s 755! We thought it would last forever too!

In no sequential number order…Why? Again, the beauty lies within the beholder! Here’s some of sports greatest records that seem perhaps they might stand the test of time. Now if only needles & syringes don’t start poking at them!

Ripken's consecutive games will never be broken. No one will ever come close. It will be shocking if someone, in today's baseball era, gets halfway there. Absolutely amazing.

Cael Sanderson is also incredible; I'm sure our fellow Chairman InterMat will agree. All of the records for consecutive wins are pretty ridiculous, particularly Wooden at UCLA.

Cy Young's 511 wins will never, ever be touched. We're calling 300 the magic number, and even that milestone is becoming harder to reach.

Great article.

Only way Cy Young's mark is borken is if starting pitchers will go less than 5 innings each start. If that occurs, I can see a relief pitcher picking up 500 wins during their career.

Great post. Enjoyed reading that list. Personally, I think the most impressive individual record on there is DiMaggio's hitting streak. Cal's streak is probably just as unbreakable, but statisticians will tell you that of any sports streak or record, DiMaggio's streak is the least probable.

But we should also keep in mind that virtually every record people have said would never fall has fallen. That said, if they ever find a way to clean up the performance ehnacing drugs, Bonds' 73 homers may stand for a long, long time.

Oh and no one is touching 500 wins. come on, we'll be lucky to see a single 30 win season in our remaining lifetimes.

I'm with you on the Cal & Joe D streak...Both won't ever be touched. Although I have to throw in the John Wooden's 10 NCAA basketball titles & the 88 Consecutive wins for UCLA Men’s Basketball. The Bulls 72-10 will likely stand up too

The Mavs came close to the Bulls this past year, I think it can be done eventually.

Hmmm...records that really don;t have a shot to be broken...

Cal's could be...i think there is a shot for a player to play the 20-ot years to do it...

Joe D's streak will also be broken...may take a while...but its plausible

Cy Youngs...that's practically impossible, Nolan Ryan's Ks...a level below but still nearly impossible...wooden's 10 titles...along the lines of Cy's...and Wilt the Stilt's will not either...

I don't think so because every team is focused on resting their players at the end of the season that already has their seeding on lock

All of the Great One's records will one day be broken. Some, sooner than many would expect.

Single season batting average isn't going down anytime soon, either. Tomlinson has a chance to catch Jerry Rice's TDs....
