Spike Owen
[edit] Biography
Spike Owen (Spike Dee Owen) was born on April 19, 1961 in Cleburne, Texas. He made his Major League debut on June 25, 1983 for the Seattle Mariners. In 1983, his rookie year, he hit .196 with 2 home runs and 21 RBI. Owen played for the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Montreal Expos, New York Yankees and California Angels over the course of his 13 year career.
Spike was captain of the Mariners in 1986 (he is still the only Captain in Mariners history), however he was traded in August of that year to the Boston Red Sox, along with Dave Henderson. In his third game with the Sox he tied a major league record with 6 runs scored. He was a valuable member down the stretch and in the playoff for the Red Sox with both his bat and glove. Owen was never a power hitter, but was patient and knew how to get on base, his career OBP was a .324. He was a solid defender, leading the AL three times and twice leading the NL in fielding percentage, in the process he set a then NL record with 61 consecutive errorless games.
