Spend a lot of money and get it up the ass

I'd wrote early in spring training on my own blog about all the ridiculous free agent contracts that teams were throwing in front of players. I was amazed not only at the silly dollar amounts but also at who was getting these contracts. Being an A's fan, Barry Zito and his $126 million were at the top of my list.

And now the Giants have a below .500 pitcher with a beautiful hanging breaking ball who walks alot of people when he isn't hanging said breaking ball. Ah yes but he is not the only high priced bust out there. Look at the Dodgers who gave a truckload of cash to Jason Schmidt. Schmidt is now having shoulder surgery because he can't break an egg throwing it against a brick wall.

But that's not all for the Dodgers. They also overpaid for Juan Pierre. Why did they give all that money to a guy who doesn't walk enough for a leadoff man? Well he is fast. And let's see...he hit .326 a few years ago. Look, Pierre could be a good signing but not for the amount of cash they threw at him. Now, he is pressing to prove he is worth all that money. Talk about a no-win situation.

And then we have Alfonso Soriano and the Cubs. Soriano is a great player and usually the center of attention, but when you have Lou Piniella having meltdowns, pitchers and catchers fighting, and even Derrek Lee losing his mind...Soriano can just slide into the wood work. He has decent numbers but the problem is Soriano can't pitch. The Cubs are without Wood and Prior as usual and even Wade Miller. The cash they spent on Soriano could have been spent on pitching! Well, as long as it wasn't Zito or Schmidt or that clown Jeff Weaver.

Being an A's fan, I am used to my team not overpaying for free agents unless you count Estaban Loiaza who is injured...best thing he has done for the team. I think if more teams did a better job at developing talent from within and just signed some mid-level free agents, you'd have some parity rather than parity.

Well part of the reason there were so many huge contracts in baseball is because the business is very good. Prices are going to keep getting higher and higher. We all have to get used it to. Just imagine what Johan Santana's contract will be in 2 years.

Pierre is a good player but not the kind of player you sign to a $44 million contract. He has one of the best work ethics of any player in history of baseball this side of Nolan Ryan but even that doesn't make him worth this kind of money.
