Wow! what a game last night.
Here are a few observations I had watching the game
- Obviously A-Rod is pounding everything in sight right now but he's really got Schilling's number. I just feel that Schilling knowing that he can't blow the ball past him anymore just tries to bust him in on the hands every chance he gets because his breaking stuff doesn't have the same bite because of lost velocity. You can see A-Rod is looking middle in every at bat.
- Mo Rivera was consistently below 90 mph or so it seemed to me on the gun last night. Normally I don't care so much about radar readings, but this early in the season it must concern fans of the Evil Empire. Dusty Baker or one of the talking heads attributed it to the fact that Rivera hasn't had many appearances so far and might still bebuilding up his arm strength.
- Today's starter for Boston Josh Beckett has been very good so far this season. I like the fact that he's throwing more breaking stuff. Even though I don't think his breaking stuff will ever become a true weapon, I think just the appearance of it is enough to throw hitters timing off enough. They can't just sit on the fastball and he doesn't even necessarily have to throw strikes with it to have it be effective.
