Sox Eliminated, Ortiz Historical

Vote

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Curt Schilling toed the mound for the first time in three weeks against MLB's hottest team, the Minnesota Twins, in Fenway Park. Needing to win (after the Yankees lost to Toronto) in order to stave off elimination, the Sox came up short - on the wrong end of an 8-2 score. As a result, the Yankees have captured the American League East title for the ninth consecutive year.

In the sixth inning, David Ortiz hit a Boof Bonser offering into the right-center field seats for his 50th round-tripper of the season, tying the club record set by Jimmie Foxx in 1938. Ortiz has ten games remaining to lay undisputed claim to the hallowed record.

Ortiz would have had a real shot at 62 -- the AL record -- had he not fallen to injury. Too bad, too.

Hafner may have had an outside shot as well if his season wouldn't have ended a month early

Apparently two people don't like the idea of Ortiz and Hafner chasing 61*?

Long Live "Double X" (even though he's dead) Were you aware? - Jimmie Foxx was the 'real life' Rockford Peaches coach, Jimmy Dugan from "A League of Their Own"

Jimmie Foxx sadly doesn't get nearly the respect he deserves. He is, in my opinion, the greatest slugger of all time. I can't recall his career HR total, but I do remember that at 32, he was the youngest player to hit 500 HR's, 2 yrs ahead of names such as Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr., and Sammy Sosa.

I bet if you asked people to name the 5 greatest sluggers of all time, hardly any of them would mention Foxx. I'm glad to see someone thinking of "The Beast".

Long live the memory of Jimmie Foxx, one of the greatest to ever to play the game.

Yer DAMN right!!! Too bad all of his records by age are getting destroyed by another non-respected slugger... AROD is almost 2 years ahead of him right now!

Well, no one, which is why it'd be the AL record.

Is there anyone out there that can break Maris' 61 HRs in the NL or AL without steroids? Doesn't look like it. Record still stands, Maris' 61 HRs in a single season will not be broken anytime soon...
