Source: Soriano to White Sox?

I'm not going to post this as news because it's not yet, but ESPN is reporting that the Chicago White Sox are "extremely close" to completing a trade for Alfonso Soriano.

The only apparent stumbling block is if Soriano and the Washington Nationals agree on a new contract.

This is particularly interesting because in the last few days the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins have been the front runners and now a third Central Division team has come out of nowhere and might win the Soriano Sweepstakes.

All this of course sucks for Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals fans as the rest of the division continues to try and get better while the two bottom-dwellers are not a part of any rumor for anybody.

Supposedly McCarthy is rumored to be in the deal. If so, I think its a dumb deal for the sox. They need pitching this year. Their starting staff has been kind of shaky. Buerle, Garcia are having worse years this year. Vasquez is overrated and their bullpen isn't as strong as last year. HRs don't win championships, pitching speed and defense does. . .

McCarthy hasn't done much, yet, but he ranges to be a decent pitchers. Soriano is great and all, but too much offense can spoil the pot. Look at the Yankees and St. Louis who are built for the regular season and die in the post-season.

Yankees and St Louis die in the post season? St. Louis went to the World Series in 04 and the Yanks have won numerous titles with "too much offense". Granted they haven't won one in a while, but the wons they did win were won with just as much offense.

I agree, this would be a bad deal for the Sox. They don't need another bat, they just need to get back to playing to form. They're better than the level they're playing at right now, so I don't think they should tinker with the team. Maybe they'd play better if Guillen would SHUT UP and be content with a win instead of only finding displeasure with his pitcher not getting into a bean-ball war. The Sox win on contact hitting and good defense. Soriano provides neither. Most teams would be fortunate to have him, but he doesn't fit into Chicago's scheme at all.

Actually this is good for the Indians because whoever gets Soriano will give up mucho prospects for a 2 month rental. Meanwhile, the Indians have no shot this season so what's it matter? It will only suck if the White Sox are able to resign Soriano. But at this point, I would be hesitant to believe any of these rumors. I mean, how many times was A-Rod "extremely close" to going to Boston?

Good point. I think the Indians will rebound next year. Sizemore will be more mature. Hafner will still be a monster and Carmona should solidify the bullpen. Why did the Indians trade Wickman though?

Wick was only signed through this year and he will probably retire this offseaon. They will now be able to try some of the young guys in the closer's role and they get a decent prospect out of it, plus Wick gets to pitch for a contender. Good move for everyone involved.

I agree--Any team that lands A-Rod or Soriano is seemingly "renting them" as there are few teams that can retain them and their huge contracts. If Soriano goes to the White Sox, then I would expect the team to unload a few of their better players in the offseason to accomodate all those big contracts (Thome, Konerko, Soriano, etc).

The more I see the rumors about Soriano the more Im doubting he will be delt. Rumors around here (DC) are even saying its doubtful a deal will get done for him before the deadline. He likes DC,and has shown strong interest in wanting to return to the team in next season. Like Friskysman said no team wants to a 2 month rental player who will only provide a marginal impact.

I heard that Sori may move back to second base if Jose Vidro is dealt. Any truth to this?

How about a Podsednik-Sori-Thome-Konerko-Dye top of the order?

It would be a nasty batting order if Soriano goes up there. He has been knocking the cover off the ball with the Nats, and RFK is not an easy stadium to get the ball out of.

People have been saying this would be a bad deal because the ChiSox need to focus on getting better pitching. The problem with that is there isn't any better pitching to be had after big names like Zito, Willis and Schmidt and even Schmidt might be the only one of those to be traded. Chicago needs to improve somehow to catch Detroit so it might as well be with Soriano.

I think they'd do better to stand pat. They've got a good team, and even with the recent slide, they're in great position to reach the playoffs. When the playoffs start, it's like a whole new season. I don't think they should move for better hitting or better pitching. They've got all the bats and all the arms they need to win. Someone in the front office just needs to tell Guillen to stop worrying about hitting opposing batters and start worrying about winning.

If Bowden makes this deal before the 31st, then his reputation will go down and here is why. He could wait to see how things go with the Tigers. He could get THREE GOOD PROSPECTS, NOT ONE!

There is no reason at all for the Tigers to make a deal for Soriano and give up three very good prospects.

Actually there is and here is why. First, they need as many bats as possible and giving up Sanchez will not hurt them in the long run. We have a great in-depth picthing system in the minors, including Andrew Miller, Edguardo de la Cruz, and other players. Even though I love Sanchez, I would give him up for Soriano only if we signed Soriano. Soriano is an impact player and any team could use him. Look at their lineup. A great team is in the making for many years to come. You have youngsters such as Shelton, Granderson, Inge, and watch out for Maybin. Then you have great veterans that have lots of years in them in Ordonez and Polanco and Guillen. You do the math.

Soriano seems like the kind of guy who would be content as the star on an OK team. At this point, having just been sold, I'm not if the Nationals have much chance of contending in the near future. Really, why would he want to stay when he knows that he could win a title this year? 1. to play second if they trade vidro. 2. he just really loves the city and team. 3. he doesn't like the pressure of a pennant race. it's like the A-rod theory.
