Forget the steroids and the corked bat -- at least for a minute.
Whether Sammy Sosa is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame may depend on how much value the home run is given because, basically, that’s all Sosa’s done well during his Major League Baseball career.
Sosa’s .273 career batting average definitely isn’t HOF worthy. Neither are his 2,262 strikeouts, which is more than one K in every four at bats. He’s never been known as a superb fielder.
But he’s jacked 600 home runs. He’s one of just five players – including Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds – to reach that plateau. Steroids or not, that’s impressive.
Is Sosa a great all-around player? No way. But is he a great slugger? No doubt. And that might be enough when his name is added to the ballot.
