Soriano Refuses to Play OF

17
Vote

Alfonso Soriano refused to start in left field for the Washington Nationals for Monday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. GM Jim Bowden said that Soriano will be given a second chance to play the outfield on Wednesday afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals. If Soriano refuses, the team most likely will put him on the disqualified list without pay.

Honest-to-god, what did these guys think they were getting when they signed Soriano? He has consistently said he'll only play second. I can't believe they'd be so dumb to think that he'd change his mind. He's WAY more valuable (cash-wise to himself) to play 2b. Otherwise he's a run-of-the-mill outfielder. Shame on Bowden.

Where do you think Soriano would go in a trade?

He should look at it this way... he couldn't possibly be as bad defensively in the OF as he is at 2B, right? Right? C'mon, Alfonso, you're lucky anybody wants you at all, given the wild abandon with which you swing. You know, I'm not sure who's stupider at this point, Jim "Guzman is just what we need" Bowden, or Soriano...

I agree with the Anonymous Fanatic. That's why I didn't get the Astros' interest in him last year. He's been saying for over a year that he would not play the outfield. Suddenly the Nationals are surprised that he's sticking by what he's been saying for more than a year? That was awfully stupid. They should have analyzed their infield situation before they got Soriano.

I don't understand why no one has tried moving him to SS. Christian Guzman had an embarrassingly bad year. He flat out sucks. Soriano came up as a SS with the Yankees. Maybe he is willing to go from 2B to SS. It keeps him in the infield and could be a compromise. Plus anyone they put in left field will be more productive then Guzman, so their lineup will be improved.

I wouldn't want him on the Mets. He's got the talent, obviously, but he seems to be a malcontent. You don't need this type of cancer on a team.

I don't know why they aren't moving him to SS, either. That's the position he played when he came up. He only got moved to 2b because the Yankess had Jeter at SS already. Why do the Nationals want Guzman at short so badly?

Jim Bowden is a lame duck GM. As soon as the Nats get an owner he is out the door. The best thing he can do is hold on to the young talent the Nats have and try to aquire some young starting pitchers.

You don't move Soriano to SS because... he would be the worst starting defensive SS in the league.

Every night before I go to sleep I thank God for the my family, my friends, and for the fact that the Red Sox didn't give Jim Bowden their GM job. If you're willing to pay $10 million a year, is it that hard to trade for a guy who will hit 20-30 HRs and WANTS to play in the outfield? Speaking of which, I play in a co-ed, slow-pitch softball league, and even I understand that playing second base and playing the outfield are very different things, whatever the defensive spectrum theory is. Last time Soriano played the outfield, he was barefoot and using a milk carton for a glove. Does anybody seriously expect him to switch positionns with no practice and somehow be less of a liability than he is at second? This is just a SNAFU wrapped in a sh*tstorm inside a clusterf*ck.
