[edit] Biography

Sonny, who has been involved in professional baseball since 1963 as a player, coach, scout and minor league manager, is in his fourth year on the Cubs' coaching staff. Serves as a special assistant to manager Dusty Baker. This will be his 12th year as a major league coach. As a player, he saw action with the Atlanta Braves in the 1969 NL Championship Series. As a coach, he has gone to the postseason in 1982, 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2003. After graduating from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD, in 1962, he turned down a baseball/basketball scholarship to attend the University of Maryland when he signed a pro baseball contract with Houston. His charitable endeavors include assisting the American Diabetes Association.

Managerial and Coaching Career: Sonny joined the Cubs after spending seven years in the San Francisco Giants organization including the last six on the major league staff. Before joining the Giants, he spent 19 years in Atlanta's organization including two on Joe Torre's big league coaching staff (1982-1983). After the completion of his playing career, he was hired by Atlanta as a minor league coach (at Class-A Kingsport) and scout. Worked in that capacity in 1977-1978 before spending 1979 as a coach with the full-season Savannah (A) club. Had a two-season managerial stint at Anderson (A) during the 1980-1981 campaigns before being promoted to the Braves' major league staff as first base coach.

Rejoined the player development department in 1984, serving as a roving minor league instructor, a coach at Richmond (AAA), a coach at Danville (A) and an instructor/scout with West Palm Beach (Rookie). After working as the hitting coach with San Francisco's San Jose (A) club in 1996, he joined the big league coaching staff the next season as both third base coach and infield coach. Was bench coach in 1998, as he was limited due to off-season left knee surgery. Returned to the coach's box in 1999 beginning a four-year run as Giants third base coach. Also assisted with baserunning and infield defense.

Playing Career: Sonny, a former infielder/outfielder, spent 12 seasons in the majors with Houston Astros(1963-1967) and Atlanta Braves (1968- 1974), hitting .251 in 936 games. His career highlights included stealing a then-NL rookie-record 49 bases for the Astros in 1966, recording a 5-hit game September 16, 1966, and hitting 4 inside-the-park homers at the Astrodome. Was teammates with Dusty Baker during the 1968-1974 seasons in Atlanta. Spent most of his career as a shortstop. However, he did spend much of the 1971 campaign as Atlanta's starting center fielder.
