Something I stumbled across...
On the "Welcome to ArmchairGM page, it says:
Any sports fan can add stuff for other sports fans to read, watch, and enjoy. Our sports encyclopedia has articles dealing with mainstream American sports and players but expands to more esoteric endeavors such as Japanese baseball (see, for example, all-star Kosuke Fukudome's entry) and snooker players like Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Naturally, the bit that caught my eye was "snooker players like Ronnie O'Sullivan. and "esoteric endeavors". After my American English thought that "endeavours surely must have a 'u'", my next thought was, "esoteric endeavors"? What do those words mean? Putting the snooker bit together was certainly an endeavor, it was difficult to do it whilst learning the wiki language, as I was at the time. Esoteric is defined as:
- Understood only by a chosen few or an enlightened inner circle.
- Having to do with concepts that are highly theoretical and without obvious practical application.
- Confidential; private.
Taking the first meaning, the "chosen few" and "inner circle" make it sound almost as though there is some divine entity at work... Which is perhaps a bit much for snooker and Japanese baseball? The second meaning would just be plain rude... The third is hardly true.
So, I'm not sure how to take this. I am delighted that the snooker is mentioned on that page, but I'm not sure about the use of "esoteric." It makes snooker fans either sound like Gods, or otherwise it doesn't make sense. Is there an alternative word that can be used?
