Some Thoughts on OSU vs Texas

by user I am a cpcp

I figured a recap would be a waste of time since probably just about everyone that uses this site tuned in for what was meant to be the most exciting regular season game of the season, so I thought I'd just point out a few things as I saw them. These are quite random, so bear with me.

  • First of all, after that BS helmet to helmet call, I thought it might be the Super Bowl all over again.
  • I thought this game was a prime example of how silly broadcasting can be. At the beginning of the game, they kept going on about how equally matched the teams were and how Texas had these advantages and Ohio State had these advantages, but as OSU pulled away, they started making a ton of excuses for Texas to try and make themselves look better for not calling it right in the beginning. (Which also is a good example of how Ohio teams are usually treated as well.)
  • Matthew McConaughey is a big idiot.
  • I love the disdain in the announcers voices when they have to do a dumb promo for a show they think is a waste of time (See: Dancing with the Stars)
  • I think folks outside of Buckeye nation need to take notes as Ohio States reloading power. There's a lot of talk about USC's Booty, but OSU can replace almost an entire defense and still dominate. (Huh? Sweed? Who?)
  • Although the Buckeye's D does need some work on stopping the run.
  • Ohio State hasn't faced their toughed task yet this season. The real challenge will be concentrating on teams like Cinci after posting a decisive win against Texas.
  • All in all, Ohio State proved to everyone (well, all but one person maybe) that they are no doubt the number one team in the nation at this point. They went into Austin and easily took care of business against the number two team and they did it their way.

As a Michigan fan, I know it's true, but I just can't bring myself to say it. Best of luck to Cincinnati, Penn State, Iowa and Bowling Green, the next four teams on OSU's schedule.

When the AGM poll game up, I brought up users who would vote based on preference and someone said that nobody here would do that. Are you going to be that guy?

How come you didn't say anything about Ohio State's fan rioting after the game? And who ever said Ohio State didn't have class?

Just looked around Columbus news webpages and didn't see much. Only thing I saw was "An Ohio State [male] cheerleader in custody after police say he hit three people with his car while drinking and driving early Sunday morning."

I could see Texas losing at least one more game. I was not impressed by their skill people at all. The quarterback is nice, freshmen, no matter how good, rarely take their teams to the championship game. They just can't handle the mental aspect of the game and all the things a fifth year senior can. I think he's going to be dynamite in a few years. Ohio State is for real. They never missed tackles and they just looked so solid in all facets. I predict an OSU and USC BCS game.

Who do you think they would lose to? They still have Rice, Iowa Sate, Sam Houston State, Oklahoma, Baylor, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Texas A&M. Many of them are weak. Oklahoma has struggled against two bad teams so far (Alabama-Birmingham and Washington...don't be fooled by the final score of the Washington game, they looked BAD). Nebraska struggled for two and a half quarters against Louisiana Tech before pulling out the win, and they just beat up on a I-AA school. They're going to come down to earth in a big way in their next game against USC. Texas Tech still doesn't have the defense, and I'm not convinced they have the offense, either. They scored just 35 against SMU, and then almost lost to UTEP. A&M is beating up on scrubs, they still have nothing. I really don't see what UT has to be afraid of this entire season as far as the opposition goes. UT is back to what they were in the Chris Simms years. Their toughest opponent is themselves.

Rookie QB's don't win championships in the NFL, freshmen QB's don't win titles in college. It just doesn't happen very often. Who was the last true freshman quarterback on a championship winning team? I just have a feeling that they're gonna lose again.

Not that it makes a real difference, but Colt McCoy isn't a true freshman. But I'm not saying they're going to win a championship. I think it'll be OSU and either Notre Dame or USC. But I think UT will win the Big 12 title, because I don't see who else really can. The Big 12 was down last year, and it may be even further down this year. I think UT will win simply by virture of mediocre competition. And then they'll get their butts handed to them in a BCS game.

I think OSU may be the best team in the country. Louisville does have a better chance to go all the way because of the schedule factor. OSU will face PSU, Iowa, amd U of M.

What I find odd is how OSU completely dominated the game, yet they didn't really play that well. The defense was not that impressive, yet they nearly pitched a shutout (and should have only given up 3 at the most if not for the aforementioned BS penalty to keep the Texas drive alive). So either Texas is not as good as people thought, or the Buckeyes, as they continue to improve, are going to be nearly unstoppable.

I wouldn't say they SHOULD HAVE only given up three. If it hadn't been for UT fumbling on their two yard line, they would have scored the first touchdown and not OSU. Either way, Texas should have had one TD.

I disagree ASwaff, Ohio State earned that turnover. Texas didn't earn that first down in the red zone, it was given to them.

Exactly. That was a clean, forced turnover. The penalty, on the other hand, was a farce.

My point wasn't that they didn't earn the turnover. My point was that if it hadn't been for an unlikely turnover on a play that should not have been called (after running all the way down the field, they had no business passing from the 7 yard line), it would have been 7 points the other way; 3 at the very least. The same way that Ohio State SHOULD HAVE scored 27, but for a missed field goal. Yes, UT was handed that first down on the TD drive. But the point is that one way or another, UT should have scored points. I wouldn't be so anxious to say that Ohio State should have thrown a shutout.

You can point to any play in any game and say "Well if only this or that had happened, the outcome would have been different." Yes, if UT hadn't fumbled there, they might have scored 7 and the game might have been completely different. But if the play in question is determined soley by the players, then I'm inclined to let it go. That fumble was controlled by the players on the field. The penalty was controlled by the refs.

And I can point to other BS calls that may have also affected the outcome. How about an intentional grounding that Troy Smith got away with? How about them never calling a pass interference when Limas Sweed was being grabbed on almost every play? BS calls happen, and it's up to the team to take advantage of them when they do happen. OSU was going to win the game regardless of the calls, they were simply the better team. No need to complain about the refs in order to exaggerate their performance.

I'm not exaggerating their performance. Like I said, I don't even think they played that well so I'm just surprised they won by so much. I only mention that penalty to say, "Wow, they could have pitched a shutout had that penalty not been called, yet their defense looked like a sieve most of the night. How is that possible?"
