Soccer: an ok game but could be better

8
Vote

by user Pnatt

Soccer may be the most popular sport in the world however in countries such as Australia and the United States the worldwide interest in soccer is often questioned and understandably so.

WHAT I BELIEVE IS WRONG WITH THE GAME:
1. Not enough goals
2. Offside rule
3. No video replays
4. Archaic rules and regulations
5. Penalties
6. Limits on substitutions
7. Timing
8. Diving and how the refs often get fooled!

There's no doubt that the Socceroos were robbed in the World Cup earlier this year due to a poor PK call.

A give you a vote for mentioning the offside rule. Its terrible a man beats the defenser, gets the ball, and wait, offsides!

I agree it's a pretty strange rule and what that probably should be done away with. Of course offside rules make sense in American and Canadian football cos that's different and it's for staying on your side of the line of scrimmage. I personally don't understand the rule fully the best I can describe it is that the team in possession of the ball must not have more than 2 players in front of an opposition defender between the ball and the goal. Offsides can only occur if that team is on their opponent's side of the halfway line.

The purpose of the rule I think is to stop attacking players from scoring easy goals by crowding around the goals.

I included a diagram explaining the offside rule. Probably still doesn't make any sense!!!

Excuse my ignorance, but if he's in an offsides position, why is he not necessarily offsides?

A player in an offside position is only committing an offside offence if, "at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team", in the opinion of the referee, he is involved in active play. A player is not committing an offside offence if the player receives the ball directly from a throw-in, goal kick or corner kick, or passed by an opposition player.

Why are Americans so ignorant of sports outside of their country?

Probably because we have too many sports of our own to follow in our own country. Heck, lots of Americans are ignorant about lots of sports played in America. Ice hockey (unfortunately) comes to mind.

The rules are probably too complicated for them.

I know this is a dead article, but doing away with the offside rule completely would absolutely ruin the game. If there were no offsides rule then you would invariably have forwards cherry picking at their opponents game. It would ruin all the buildup and the flow to the game. Instead of passing, defenders would just boot the ball all the way down the field to their men waiting downfield. One possible solution would be to introduce a neutral zone like in hockey, where there is no such thing as offsides.

Offsides in Soccer is horrible. It's the main reason I don't watch it. A guy gets free and all alone after he beats somebody and a the whistle is called. I especially hate when everybody is by the goal and somehow offsides is called down there.
