I’m sorry soccer, I was wrong. That’s right, I take back everything bad I ever said about you. Ok, well not everything, but I’m sorry, you’re better than I thought. When I first met you, I thought you were a game for the ladies, like tennis, but you’re not so soft now even though some of your players look more like foosballers and footballers.
One of my buddies finally got me to sit down and watch the World Cup and I was a little more impressed than I thought. He is very much an avid soccer fan, looks forward to the World Cup more than the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup Finals and the NBA Finals combined and he was willing to teach me some of the finer points of the game. A learning experience for all, I suppose.
No, Soccer won’t take its ranks among football, baseball, hockey or even basketball among my favorite sports, but it will join the ranks of sports I’m willing to watch, which is more than I can say for NASCAR. At the very least, the passion among the fans is something that equates with a franchise very near and dear to my heart (They shall remain nameless).
But finally, I am understanding the game, the movement the set up and every once and a while, the scoring. Finally another sport I can sit down and enjoy, another for the repertoire and another to enjoy a few cold ones with. Soccer, maybe our love affair is just beginning (Don’t worry football, I’ll never leave you, I just need some time away!)
Of course, there is one small thing I could do without: The draws. Like any good sport, they should be removed. And maybe a little more scoring. I can only handle 1-nil for so long. Alas, as I’m being taught the game, I’m starting to appreciate the play more than the points and finally soccer seems a little less, well, boring.
I can appreciate England’s need for a win The Angolan and Ivory Coast’s teams need for anything better than war The Brazilian powerhouse’s Yankee like stature Or Argentina’s Red Sox like Stature I can appreciate the US’s need for acceptance in their own Country And I can appreciate Mexico’s need for a little acceptance in the rest of the world
Yes Soccer, now I know why the world loves you. God bless you and thank you for just one more game I can love every once and a while. Well at least until training camp starts…
