So that's why the Yankees are top of the AL All-Star lists...

11
Vote

by user Alex Holowczak

As I checked my email this morning, I found a message from Yankees.com. It encouraged me to vote for an all Yankees team, in order to win free tickets to up coming games. (Useful for someone living in England...)

That may explain why the likes of Robinson Cano are likely to be in the All-Star game.

You'd think the Yankees would like their players to have a rest for a few days, not stretch themselves in the All-Star game.

Either that or they think they'll get to the World Series and want homefield advantage, so they want their stars to play.

I wouldn't mind, but there are better players out there than some Yankee players (e.g. Cano is top at 2B through June 20).

But if you win the tickets you can sell them on ebay. Don't forget to vote for Hidelki Matsui!

I hear Steinbrenner has a full-scale plan in place for 2010, to get Joe Torre voted in as a write-in outfield candidate.

Nice marketing move by the Ynaks. Other teams should do the same as well. Win free tickets, by voting for our players for the All-Star team. Just imagine a starting All-Star line-up full with Kansas City Royals! :)

That would be pretty funny...but I doubt the 7 Royals fans could muster that many votes. Besides, free tickets for a Royals game is punishment more than anything else.

I'm guessing there are at least a few other teams doing similiar things, if not all teams. I got an email about a sweepstakes the Indians are having where you could win the use of a Jacobs Field Suite for a game if you vote for Indians players.

And I thought we'd gotten past ballot stuffing. Major League Baseball continues to outdo itself as the running joke of the sports world.

Actually, I think Cano would have earned it. He has great numbers. And it's not just the Yankees. Look at every MLB website. Every site is encouraging its readers to vote for the team's players.

All the sites seem to be promoting those that are in the running for starting spots, which in the Yankees case is everyone because the balloting is just a popularity contest anyway. I don't think it should be the teams' responsibility to promote players for votes. It should be up to MLB to ensure the best players get voted on the team each year. The fact that 10+ million New Yorkers can vote 25 times for the Mets and Yankees doesn't bode too well for some probably more deserving candidates.

You don't think it might actually have something to do with the players ACTUALLY being talented? In the past, we haven't had a team comprised almost entirely of Yankees. I think people are blowing this out of proportion. I hate the Yankees as much as anyone, but it makes sense for the team to stump for their players to get on the ballot. A few weeks ago on "This Week in Baseball," they had Huston Street go and hang out with some kids to fill out All-Star ballots, and he was telling them to vote for all Athletics. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It's an exhibition game, for crying out loud.

An exhibition game that carries the World Series home-field advantage carrot.

And you think that having a lot of Yankees on the team will hurt the AL's chances of winning? Because ARod, Jeter, Cano, Giambi and Posada suck? Guys, they're all really good players. Are there people that are better? Perhaps. But it's not like Piazza being second in the catcher voting in the NL. These are really good players. And they're not winning because of this campaign. They're winning because of team popularity and name recognition. Oh, and because they're good.

But let's address the real issue at hand. The author said this is the reason why the likes of Cano are leading on the ballot. Does anyone here think it has NOTHNG to do with his stats? He's second in AL second basemen in batting average with a .325. And I'm not stunned that he's getting more votes than Mark DeRosa of the Rangers, because he's not on the ballot as their second baseman, Ian Kinsler is. So, technically he's first against AL second basemen in average. He's sixth in slugging, but again, if you eliminate irregular second basemen like Cantu and DeRosa, he's fourth. He's fourth in on-base percentage, and third if you take out DeRosa. He's fifth in stolen bases, seventh in RBIs, 6th in homers, third in doubles, and fifth in runs. He's top ten in every major offensive category, and top five in most. Again - does anyone really think that doesn't merit being the starting second baseman at the All Star game? The only player that I can see that could possibly be more deserving would be Mark DeRosa, but again, he's not even on the ballot. I hate the Yankees as much as anyone, I'm just trying to be reasonable here. Can anyone actually point to any Yankee leading in All Star balloting and give a reason why they're not deserving of it?

After thinking about it for a little bit...why would the Yankees really want their players on the all-star team? Wouldn't they rather have them get the 3 day weekend to rest and relax? And wouldn't they rather have the best possible team out there? If the All-Star game determines home field advantage, the Yankees are one of the teams who want the AL to win. It makes sense from a promotional standpoint I guess, but it's not so smart from a baseball standpoint.
