So, Griese is your season savior. I'm sorry.

The day has come when Chicago Bears can finally rejoice their ascent to the NFL elite. They have benched their underachieving quarterback [ Rex Grossman ] and are now elevating their underachieving quarterback [ Brian Griese ] to the starting spot. This all, in hopes of resurrecting their offense to be merely a swan around their neck, and not an albatross.

> Coach Lovie Smith said Monday that he had made up his mind, and his decision leaked out all over the place Tuesday. It came as a surprise to no one that Brian Griese will take over for Rex Grossman with the hope that he can breathe life into one of the NFL's worst offenses.

This was an easy decision to make, two years ago, and even easier now that the quarterback is single-handedly costing them games. The defense is really good, even with the colossal losses, but even they can only do so much when they are put behind the 8 ball. Really, they're only human, and by the time the 4th quarter rolls around, the time of possession, short field, and other lovable circumstances (turnovers) do wear on that unit.

Griese can only make things better, by the Hammer of Thor, he can't possibly make them worse no matter how hard he tried. But, if Griese couldn't beat out Grossman for a second year running, should Lovie really be pinning playoff hopes to his jersey? Truth be told, Griese is an average quarterback at best, and there are reasons as to why he didn't pan out in other places. The same reasons why he didn't get a starting job when he came to Chicago. He is better than Orton though, but he certainly doesn't party as well.

This should be entertaining.

As a Bronco fan, I can tell you from experience that he will do just enough to raise your hopes, and then bring it all crashing down. I hope I am wrong, but I have seen his handy work.

Im so glad to hear from a Broncos fan. I have several friends who are Broncos fans, and they remember when they practically chases Griese out of town because he was so bad. So just remember that Bears fans. You will see marked improvedment over Grossman. However Grossman had a QB Rating of 33 so a mark of 59 is sitll a big improvement, doesnt meakt it translates to a good QB.

The Bears team is a better team then the Broncos were when Greise quarterbacked them. I think Greise will help this team by not turning the ball over.

Since he can't possibly be worse, logic says, they're already a better team with him at the helm.

Brian Griese will probably be good enough not to lose games, but the Bears aren't going to be good enough to really contend unless they have a QB who can win games if the Bears defense inexplicably gives up the lead. They'll make the playoffs, probably even beat out the Packers for NFC North title when all is said and done, but they're going to need a late 1st round QB in next year's draft before they're a threat to win it all. If Brennan, Henne, or Ryan end up in Chicago, the Bears all of a sudden become the class of the NFC again. Having a QB who doesn't lose might be good enough in college, but in the NFL, the QB needs to earn the capital C on his jersey.

Bill Simmons brought this up on his podcast, and it got me thinking. Why haven't the Bears signed Drew Bledsoe? He's pretty bad, but the whole point of the Bears quarterback position is to not lose games. Grossman couldn't managed that, and I bet Griese won't either. A veteran like Bledsoe might be able to hold it together there.

Makes alot of sense although Bledsoe did look pretty bad in those last few games in dallas. Plus I think bledsoe wants to stay retired.

I think what is going unnoticed in Chicago, is that the defense simply isn't as good as people want to believe. It is still one of the better units in the league, but they have not played at the same level since midseason last year. I just don't think it's a good idea to think that the defense will consistently win games on its own with a QB who does nothing but "not lose the game." The only defenses that were able to do that were the Raven's championship unit and maybe the '85 Bears, and these Bears are not in the same league as those guys. Not to mention the Bears currently have a very poor running game - something that you must have if you plan on winning a championship with defense.

I don't think this will make much of a difference, it's purely an act of desperation.

He is not the savior, but it had to happen. I think the offense will improve, but we all know he had only one good season as a Bronco. This year they might get by with Griese, but not for the future.
