Snooker Shame

The International Billiards and Snooker Federation became the most recent in a disturbing trend of international sporting bodies biased against the State of Israel. FIFA, the world's governing football (or "soccer") association has long been biased against Israel. Israel is forced to play outside of their geographical region because FIFA succumbs to pressure from the Arab states, and Israel is often forced to play its home games outside the country for the same reasons. The same has been true with FIBA, FIFA'a basketball equivalent.

As reported in the Jerusalem Post, the Snooker Federation has informed Israeli champion Roei Fernandez that he is not invited to play alongside the other national champions at the IBSF World Snooker Championship in Annan, Jordan. Officially, the Snooker Federation said it could not guarantee the safety of the Israeli athlete, stating, "I personally believe that due to the local precarious situation and the present serious unrest that still exists between your country and Lebanon, the country of Jordan is certainly not the right place to guarantee the security of your players." Of course Jordan and Israel have been officially at peace for a decade and have enjoyed peaceful relations since the 1970s.

No other athlete, form any other country, was similarly blackballed. It is unclear whether a Lebanese Snooker player was invited to play or not. What is clear is that the Snooker Federation's decision reeks of politics and anti-Israel bias. Shame on you Snooker. Shame on you.

And here I thought sports is what helped people/countries put differences aside...

The fact that stuff like this even happens is sad. Too many people on this planet are spending their days on this planet hating people different than themselves. Since we're all different, that's a lot of hate.

Hateful attitudes and disagreements aren't going to be helpful when some aliens finally come to earth and wipe us out because we're too busy fighting with each other to band together for Earth and Humankind.

I just don't see why you hold an event in a location where one of the competitors is at risk of physical harm. "One of our players is unsafe here" usually leads to the conclusion "so we'll hold the event elsewhere," not "so he should stay home."

The IBSF is in control of amateur snooker. The WPBSA is in control of professional snooker. For hundreds of years, it has been knowledge that snooker has been a poorly governed sport. In the pro world it has turned its' image around, although the Grand Prix being changed to best of 5 in a Round Robin format is a bit stupid (it makes it hard for me to pubish the results!). The amateur game (which, ironically, deals mainly in League style events) hasn't however. Amateur snooker does not have to offer him a place in the Amateur World Championship. If they feel a country would put an uncompetitive player into it, they will not let them take part. Also, they cannot guarantee his safety in that country. Being an amateur game, it is not fair that he should risk injury to himself and lose money in terms of time off work. That said, I feel he should be invited to play, although the rules state that the IBSF are unfer no compulsion to do so.
