Smoky Burgess (Forrest Harrill Burgess) was born on February 6, 1927 in Caroleen, North Carolina. He made his Major League debut on April 19, 1949 for the Chicago Cubs. In 1951, his rookie year, he hit .251 with 2 home runs and 20 RBI. Burgess played for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox over the course of his 17 year career.

Most people believe that Smoky Burgess's best season was 1955, when he slugged 21 home runs, hit for a .301 average and knocked in 78 runs.
