Slumps Are Slumps; Everyone Has Em; Get Over It

Everybody in baseball goes through a slump once in a while. Once they are in that slump, almost every one of their "fans" turn their back on them and have no faith in them whatsoever. Many players on the Red Sox have been through slumps: Manny Ramirez, Coco Crisp, even David Ortiz. The one guy that I felt sorry for because of his huge slump was Julio Lugo. Almost everyone (even Red Sox fans) had little, if not no faith in him. Many people thought that he sucked and was completely useless of the team, and he was the weakest link in the chain. I'm sure many people changed their minds about that.

Every single player on every team has his ups and downs, and every player can get lucky on certain days. You can't get lucky on every single day you play, but we know how certain people do in a season. Look at A-Rod's numbers in his bad month last season or Derek Jeter's bad start a couple of years ago (0-40 something). Look what happened at the end of the season. They both had good seasons in their slumping months. I guess this is why the "Comeback Player of the Year" award started; because of a player having one bad year, we need to respect the players for what they have done and admit that we are wrong by judging certain players by one bad season, or one bad month of a season.

Other players that I can name are Pat Burrell, Hideki Matsui, Alfonso Soriano, Mariano Rivera, Chone Figgins, Albert Pujols and Paul Konerko. Let's look at one guy who has broke out big in his slump.

Pat Burrell: He had a good start of the season with a .292 AVG, and a .449 OBP in April. In May, he went downhill, and I'm sure many people (some being Phillies fans) thought that he was not going to do much for the rest of the season. In May, he only had a .179 AVG, and in June, it was even worse, as he hit only .129. Many of you people who know Pat Burrell know that he doesn't hit that well for average, but in June, he made up for those two bad months, as he hit .435 with 6 home runs and 22 RBIs. He was on the Mendoza line in the beginning of the July, and since then, he increased his average by .060, his OBP by .054, and his SLG by .106. He is currently on a 11 game hitting streak and has been on base the last 23 games. Not what you thought about Burrell huh? Getting on base 23 out of the last 23 games.

Now, there are a lot of other players that have had slumps who haven't broke out of it. I would just like to send a message to the people who judge players too quickly, and that means if you think guys like Andruw Jones and Scott Rolen suck right now, all I have to say is have faith in those players to do well. We all wish that out teams can do well all the time, but one side has got to win, and one side has to lose; it's either the pitcher/defense or the batter who wins every single at-bat. Some people just get unlucky, and I think that is what makes baseball great: it's spontaneous, and you never know what will happen in a game.

Exactly. Most people, most of the media actually, dwell on the negative things that players do. They expect everyone to just hit more and more. One bad game, or one bad week, and they criticize you.

See what I mean. Andruw Jones just hit a homer. Good days, bad days. It's all a part of the game. I think Jones will do better hitting in the 5 or 6 spot. He is in the 5 spot right now, and got a hold of one, and gave the braves a one run lead.

Good article. You should break down the slump numbers not only ny month, but career wise. For example, what do the monthly splits of Pat the Bat look like. off of the top of my head, he has a great April and July. The rest of the months are average to awful.

Over the last 3 years, Pat Burrell has a .297 and averages 3.5 homers and 19 RBIs in April. In May, he has a .299 AVG, with 6 homers and 21 RBIs. In June, he's .230, with under 6 homers and 15 RBIs. In July, he's .253 with 4 homers and under 15 RBIs. In August, he's .269, with under 3 homers and 12+ RBIs. Finally, in September/October, he's .255 with under 3 homers and 12 RBIs. He did good in May throughout his career until this season. Overall, his best months are usually April and May, but I predict his best months are going to be either April and July or April and August...

I really don't think monthly stats are of much significance; is there any logical reason why Burrell would hit better in July than in June? The only ways I would look at it for significance would be the early April numbers (to see if he's consistantly hot/cold coming out of Spring Training) and the late-season numbers (to see if he gets fatigued more than you'd expect). I don't think any other monthly splits are anything more than statistical fluctuation.

You would be surprised what the monthly stats can show. What would be more interested would be stas based on the temperature at game time.

The difference between Ortiz and Manny is they are good players wheras Lugo sucks. When a good player has a bad streak, we should know its temporary. When a lousy player, like Lugo, has a good streak, everyone mistakingly thinks he all of a sudden became good. Even Hall of Famers have "career" years, but they also have another ten or twelve similar seasons. If a guy has five bad seasons and all of a sudden goes All-Star on us, why would we assume it will continue? Because he was traded? Still got to hit the ball..

Also, if anyone feels like adding stats of the players above to prove that they have slumped and are doing better this year, feel free to do so.

Just a few from my team the Cubs...as you said, Soriano started off very slowly after signing that big deal to patrol some of the outfield grass at the Friendly Confines, hitting .270 while going homerless with 1 measly RBI in April, then improved to .302 with 4 homers and 11 RBI in May. June he was en fuego, hitting .336 with 11 bombs and 18 RBI while being named NL Player of the Month. He tapered off a bit in July, hitting .265/3/12, though he has started off August 5 of 9 in the first two games. The biggest example of a guy who slumped and recovered, at least for me, is Carlos Zambrano. On June 1, the day he brawled with Michael Barrett, Zambrano was 5-5 with an ERA of 5.62. Since then, he has gone 9-2, dropped his ERA 2.15 runs to 3.47, and is the only 14 game winner in the majors at the moment. He was the NL Pitcher of the Month in July, going 5-1 with a 1.38 ERA, and has allowed more than 2 runs just once in his last 11 starts, that being a 7 inning, 3 run stint against the Pirates the day before the All Star Break.

Zambrano is another great example. He's had a great July. He deserved to be pitcher of the month. Just look at the numbers. Facts are the only things that can't lie in sports..

lol if you want to talk about Zambrano's hitting, he is hitting .291 with a pair of homers. In his last start against CIN on Sunday, he outhit the Reds in his 7 1/3 innings of work, 3 to 2.

As a Chicago fan, I would rather have Big Z on the mound winning games then stick him in the field...let's not forget the Cards converted Ankiel mainly due to his inability to find the strike zone. While Ankiel has proven to be a decent hitting outfielder, I think Zambrano has a much brighter future pitching, especially with a shot at winning 20.  ;)

There's a reason he's a pitcher...I'm not being serious...

But, most pitchers are/were the best baseball players on their respective teams coming up...so of course they're good hitters...

I mean, look at pitchers batting .200 in limited time...they don't take BP, they don't really study pitchers to hit, they don't really think about it all that much and they still get about 2 hits every 3 starts...(assuming 3 ABs a game?)

One would assume the greatest player ever would be able to do both... But in this day and age, Zambrano at the plate is very impressive and a nice, luxury for the cubs...any NL team that doesn't have to PH for a pitcher out of necessity (like a tie in the 5th for example) certainly has an advantage...

Even if Zambrano didn't pitch and played defense, where would he play? First base? Derrek Lee is there. He doesn't have that much range, and is not that fast, so that cancels out the outfield as well as third, short, and second. Catcher? He's got the arm, but he doesn't have any experience. BUT, he sure could beat Jason Kendall there...

Ok...not only is this hypothetical, but its probably dumb

I don't know if you've seen Jacque jones play center field...but he kinda sucks...just but the big Z out there...screw it...jones has a .964 FP in CF and is batting .250 or so...Zambrano could do that...maybe?

Or he could play left...gotta be better that Murton?

Or he could play first and let D-Lee play outfield...why not?

haha. I love how we're trying to think of a position other than pitcher for Zambrano to play, even though it's NEVER gonna happen. Zambrano has no range whatsoever. I bet you his average would be about .400, but he can't beat out deep infield singles. He's not fast at all. I'd say catcher, still. Jason Kendall is getting old, and is going downhill.

lol first, Soriano is in LF, they moved him from CF after about a dozen games, and I am not taking that cannon out of the outfield.

Lee has an arm, and has some mobility, and hell, he can't be slower than Cliff Floyd, who is the Cubs answer to Burrell, out in the late innings for a defensive replacement in Angel Pagan.

Murton should have stayed in damn Iowa.
