Six easy ways to improve US Rugby

by user Alex Holowczak

Rugby Union is a game on the grow in the United States.

There is a domestic league and a growing fan base.

I believe there are some steps it should take to push US Rugby to the next level.

1. Host the Rugby Union World Cup
This would be big. Like USA '94, it would increase the appeal of the game, and make the average American aware of it's existance. That can only help the game. 2007 and 2011 are taken. 2015 is likely to go to Japan, another developing nation. If USA can get 2019 (perhaps more likely if joined with Canada), then that would be a good solution. Chances are though, that 2019 may go to England, or Ireland, or another European country, but 2023 may be in range. It would be good to have a strong team to take to those Championships. Fifteen years will give time for a younger generation to excel.

2. Professionalism
It is still an amateur sport in the States. The more successful international nations have become professional about 20 years ago, and if the States wants to be good, they need to do the same.

3. Season
The season needs to fall inline with the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, and be held from September to April time the year after. If games were held on Saturday afternoons (they would be played weekly), this would avoid clashes with the NFL in Autumn, and after February all attention will be on it. This will draw the masses. Perhaps a Playoff Final wouldn't do any harm either. April makes sure that it doesn't clash with MLB too much - besides, if they were playoffs in April, it may be more interesting than the first few games of a baseball season.

4. TV Coverage
A Saturday afternoon slot would give ESPN (e.g.) something to show on a Saturday. It may even take attention away from the Yankees and Red Sox for a month or so. This would spread the game to the masses.

5. International Competition
Europe has the Six Nations, the Southern Hemisphere has the Tri Nations. The Americas teams could do worse than hold a summer Four Nations Tournament. The four best in the Americas are Canada, United States, Argentina, and Uruguay, and this would help the States on an International Stage. This can be expanded to involve other developing Nations such as Chile. It could even be divided into a North and South America division, with the winner of each playing off for the Americas Cup... Or something like that - the possibilities are endless

6. A good World Cup Run
The Rugby World Cup is tough, in that only eight adavnce from the four groups of five. The Quarter Finals are usually between the three Tri Nations sides, and the teams in the old Five Nations in Europe (i.e. the Six Nations minus Italy). Italy, Argentina, Fiji and Canada are next in the pecking order, so USA will generally be the fourth seeds in a group. This makes advancing in the competition tough as there is such a gulf between each nation in the World Rankings. A flukey run to the Quarter Finals would do US Rugby the world of good.

The top five are what most Six Nations and Tri Nations teams have. If they are the best, and you want to become the best, immitating them is the way to go to get there. US Rugby has improved radically.

A note worth considering - USA have been in every single Rugby Union World Cup since it started in 1987. If they are in the top 16 to 20 that way, there is always a chance they can break out into the elite of the world.

Not bad Alex, thats a pretty solid article although I disagree with with some it, and we are currently doing some of that as is. Currently we play year round in the USA. Div 1,2,3 play a regular season that streatches from early sept through November, with the playoffs in the Sring. Super League runs spring into early summer. They are trying to develop a national tourney like the 6 nations. Currently that is given to the Churchill Cup played between USA, Canada, Ireland, NZ Mauri and like 2 other teams. Another step that has been taken is the invention of the NA4 (North America for Rugby) which showcased 4 developmental sides from Canada and the USA in a round robin style tourney. Hosting the CUp here would be amazing its what helped soccer in the USA, and a television contract would be great. USA Rugby is in negotions with ESPN to do that for the 07 Cup

Fair enough - I think it would be better to have one continuous season, rather than Sep to Nov, followed by a Spring season. It may help continuity. The NA4 sounds good. I don't get why Ireland are in the Churchill Cup. I think that a Four Nations solely for American Nations would be better, with the USA-Canada match in it going towards another trophy. I didn't know some of that sort of stuff though.

Yeah, I kind alike the break in the middle of the year though. If not your playing rugby 9 mnths a yr and thats too much with the numbers we have right now. The NA4 went really well this year. Its a great chance for young kids to gain international exposure and has become an instant training ground for the Eagles.Im not sure what the break down of the Churchill Cup is, but the basis is its susposed to be between USA and Canada, but this past yr NZ Mauri ran away with it, and the year before that the Welsh did.

Good article. Only problem I see though is that if you play from September through April on Saturdays, it will not attract the masses. Most college football games are on saturdays and that already attracts a great number of people not only at the games, but watching on TV. Also, ESPN would have a hard time televising Rugby, when they are already televising College Football.

I think another thing that would help US rugby would be in the collegiate setting. I'm not sure what the numbers are, but I think a lot of schools have just a club rugby team as opposed to an actual NCAA team. That is the case with my school, however a lot of people go to the games, and everyone seems to enjoy it. I know it is tough to add sports with Title 9, but anything that could be done would help rugby in the US.

I agree, with that, but they are going to play on Saturdays no matter what. Im okay with sticking with the Super League schedule and playing saturdays in the spring, then we are only competing with march Madness, adn I think it would do well during the months of may and june when basketball is just down to the playoff games.

The NC2A will not allow rugby to become a sanctioned sport.

It has to do with a few things, one of which was the safety, and also some of the age old rugby traditions that go along with the game.

My buddy went to Villanova, and at one Rugby game they had 10 kegs, it was ridiculous. So many people showed up.

Yeah, theres always beer on the sidelines. In college I always took a few to the game with me for when I was done. Even now playing in the Super League I make up a lil cooler with some adult beverages.

It could be a good sport for prep schools and for universities. It seems mor elike an east coast sport to me. I definantly can't get going here on the west coast in CA, unless they played it on the ebach with the baywatch babes.

Are you kidding me? The West coast has the best teams in the Country. Cal, and Cal Poly are two of the best college squads in the country. Not to mention the USA national team is based out of San Fran.
