[edit] Biography
Selected in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Sidney Rice, who caught 138 receptions for 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns in his high school career before playing at the college level at the University of South Carolina, comes to a team sorely in need of wide receivers.
After parting ways with WR Randy Moss over two seasons ago, the Vikings have seen a talent drain at the position, as the team cut WR Koren Robinson after a widely-publicized speeding incident in Mankato, Minnesota, and then lost WR Nate Burleson in free agency to Seattle after outbidding the Seahawks for the services of their Pro Bowl offensive lineman, Steve Hutchinson. After also parting ways with several less notable veteran receivers, Rice comes to a Vikings team likely to need him as at least the team's third WR option, in his rookie year.
In 2007, the default starters for the Minnesota Vikings became Troy Williamson, Bobby Wade and Robert Ferguson, although Rice has seen more time as the season has progressed. He scored his first NFL touchdown against the Green Bay Packers on September 30, 2007. Like most rookie wide receivers, he plays on special teams units and has appeared on the field most often in special "spread offense" sets on obvious passing downs.
