What gives a rookie player the right to tell a team that is ready and willing to pay him millions of dollars, that I will not play. Yi Jianlian has never set foot on a basketball court in this country, yet he knows that the Bucks are not the right team for him. That is ludicrous. I bet he cannot even name five players on the roster, or five players on the roster of one of the teams he would play for.

This is more about marketing, money, and power. Yi's agent, the Chinese government, which I feel plays a big role in this regardless of what we hear, and the NBA for that matter, all want Yi in a big metropolitan area with a heavy Asian population. Think Matsui in NY, Ichiro in Seattle, Dice-K in Boston. Unfortunately, the rules are the rules. Greg Oden was being picked first, regardless if the ping pong ball landed on Memphis, Portland, or Boston. Rookies go where they are picked. If Yi was a better player, maybe Boston would have selected him fifth.

The trade request, or mandate, is not without precendent, yielding both superstars and super busts. John Elway refused to go Baltimore, saw his wish granted, then proceeded to stick it to the Colts becoming one of the best players ever. On the other hand, Hideki Irabu had to be a Yankee, no choice in the matter. Ask Steinbrenner now how he feels about trading for the fat toad. In my book, Yi has less leg to stand on. Unproven at the professional level and collegiate level, the demand will not be exceedingly high, based on what the Bucks should request in return for a sixth pick.

My only hope is that the Bucks hold their ground and the league stays out of the matter. Milwaukee has the leverage since Yi must play for them, or go back to China. The best Yi can do is hold out, passing up the chance to play in the NBA, become a multi-millionaire, and escape China. The Bucks are not obligated to trade him, and unlike baseball, where a player can re-enter the draft a year later, they will continue to retain his rights.

Losing a first round lottery pick is tough to swallow, but having an inexperienced rookie threaten a team is unacceptable. Yi should shut up and play, then take the pick of the litter three years from now. Maybe Milwaukee is not as bas as it sounds. Hey, that Kareem guy did pretty good for himself.

Yup, I agree. I'm tired of guys like Yi Jianlian. Actually do something in the league before you start making demands to play in big markets

Earning millions to play basketball and enjoy freedom in Milwaukee should be a hell of a lot more appealing than living a suppressed life playing for Red China's national team.

"If Yi was a better player, maybe Boston would have selected him fifth." Take that one step further, if Yi actually agreed to practice against NBA players rather than 5'8" trainers, maybe Boston would've selected point. I agree with your article, but it seems Yi going to the Warriors is inevitable.

The Bucks should force this kid to sit-out if he will not play in Milwaukee.

While it's crappy of Yi and his people to do what they've, it's been done (and for some somewhat understandable reasons). What do you know about his life playing for 'Red China's National Team'? It's because of thinking like that that he wants to be in a large city with a large Chinese population. Yao Ming still goes back and plays for them every year and at every tournament despite having 'earned millions and enjoyed freedom' in the US. You've probably never left the states and never had to deal with hordes of media hounding you in a language you don't speak very well. When was the last time you were a 1% minority in a country where no one knows how to speak your language? For that matter, I'm AMERICAN and I wouldn't want to live in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee should do their best to get rid of the guy for the most they can get, bc at this point having him come and play in Milwaukee (or swallowing the lottery pick) is probably a lot worse than picking up a couple draft picks for next year. Not to mention, a lot of the teams with large Asian populations look like they'll be in the lottery next year (LA, Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, New York, etc.)

Well Ecum, if its hordes of media you are worried about for poor little young Yi, then Milwaukee ought to fit the bill perfectly.

About the Boston comment - they actually wanted a veteran to put next to Paul Pierce and Al Jefferson, as demonstrated by their behavior in the draft.

Is it true that they will retain his rights? I read somewhere, maybe the 4-letter, that if he didn't sign he was eligible for the 2008 draft. Can't seem to find that info. now though. I've always beleieved that the players should sign with whomever drafted them. Not at super expensive prices either. That is the way the draft works. You're not allowed to pick and choose who you want to play for. How would bad teams become competitive? All the best players would just go to the winning teams or the big-market teams, dependent on their priority.

I live in Milwaukee and I hear all of these people saying how they can understand how Yi wouldn't want to live here because of how horrible this city is. My question to you is, how did you come to base your opinion on Milwaukee? Did you actually live here for an extended amount of time or did you pass thru here on the way to somewhere else and while here had one bad experience that left a bad taste in your mouth? I recently had the displeasure of going to a BIG city that is to the south of us and I can tell you now, I would not trade what I have here for that. Milwaukee had pretty much everything that city had to offer except that for every one that we have they have a few more. The big cities have a higher cost of living, rude people, and let's not forget the traffic that you have to deal with 24 hours a day. Milwaukee is an up and coming city with the population of the city and surrounding areas averaging at the Million people range. I would say to all of the nay sayers out there to please keep your negative comments to yourself unless you truly have something to base your opinions on. As for him being alone in a foreign land, I have lived abroad while I was in the military and lived overseas for about a little over 3 years. I lived in Germany for more than 2 years and then had the pleasure of being sent over to Iraq for 6 months. I do understand how unusual it is going out on the town and not have much in common with the local inhabitants, but I did what I could to make the best of it and when I look back on it now, I am so happy that I got the opportunity to experience living abroad. I guess what I am trying to say is before you bash a place that alot of innocent bystanders call home please think of how you would feel if people from all over started trash talking your community because of one foreign born athelete was drafted to play basketball here.

How is this different than Kobe? That whinny little b did the same thing to Charolette. Teams out to force this guys to sit out and a not give in to there demands. Anonymous Fanatic #1 have you heard even one team actually interested in trading for him? He should feel lucky to be in the NBA.
