Show Me the Money...My god

show me the money...my god!

So this is what it has come to in the world of Baseball. Carlos Silva is set up to make 40 million plus over the next four years from the Seattle Mariners, and I am sure Kyle Lohse will be all set with something soon there after. My question is this, when did mediocre at best pitching become such a wanted commodity?

now while Silva and Lohse posses some raw talent, both have given us sufficient enough sample sizes to lean towards the fact that this is what it is with these two. Both have around one thousand big league innings under there belt, just like both have ERA's over four and whips over 1.3, not to mention pathetic ratios across the board. Yet despite all this both are going to receive a similar contract to the one Josh Beckett has with the Red Sox.

My only logic behind this is that the one thing I as a baseball fan can not see is forcing these signings. That being the business side of things. Maybe some owners feel pressure from there markets to make a splash and show a commitment to winning. And in the sad reality where these two are the best available, they have to saddle up and pay accordingly. Outside of that real however I just do not see it.

Think about this for a second. What is better from a baseball operations stand point. Taking a fl yer on some older free agents and seeing if they can catch lighting in a bottle for one year, at the same time as well giving a shot to some of your non-elite pitching prospects to see if maybe you can find a diamond in the rough (Jeremy Guthrie anyone?) or investing money into a contract that A)will be almost impossible to move and B)lock up funds when a better option becomes available.

I do not get it, nor will I ever. But hey they all make more money then I do.

My question is this, when did mediocre at best pitching become such a wanted commodity? About the same time that Jeff Weaver won the world series, why do you ask?

The answer is actually quite simple. Mediocrity began making $10 million a year when greatness got you $20 million.

The most shocking thing in baseball to me is how much money relievers are getting now. It seems like over the past 3 or 4 years they have seen a huge jump in salary.

yea Keith Law had a great piece on that about 3wks ago. Showing how more and more are getting big money 4-5 yr deals and most have been bust.

Carlos Silva isn't worth it. Why not go after Mark Prior? His upside is better and might even return to form. The Mariners could've traded for a pitcher. There are a lot of them available, at least the low profile pitchers.

My point exactly, they are making a high risk low reward move. Why not try to minimize risk and increase reward. To year for Prior at around 8-9 mill total is always better then silva for 40mill

Prior isn't signing for a two year deal. End of story on that one.

And if the market forces these prices, these are the prices paid to improve a ballclub. When the difference between an entire post-season series and sitting at home is a couple wins for your 4th or 5th starters, owners gladly pony up the dough.

If a team needs pitching help (hint: they all do) then it costs money to sign the best free agent pitching help available.

Wait until 2008 offseason if you're appalled at these numbers.

Darren Dreifort is beside himself. He can't believe his name has yet to come up in this debate of overpaid-underwhelming pitchers.
