Should the Yankees sign Roger Clemens?

by user Timothy Moreland (Bball3345)

After moving to Houston, Roger Clemens posted an ERA under 3.00 in his three seasons. Considering Houston is a hitter's park, this makes his minuscule ERA even more impressive. In this time, Clemens has shown no signs of age, likely a factor of only pitching part of the season last year. His strikeout rate has remained strong, and his control has actually improved. In the AL, Clemens ERA would see a slight jump, but remain not too far north of 3.00, making him one of the top pitchers in the league.

Not only would Clemens be an ace, but he would be pitching in the biggest market in baseball. The Yankees can more than afford the price of Clemens contract, and it would be a short-term deal, so the high price would not hurt them down the stretch. Also, consider the Yankees will be in a close competition with the Red Sox and possibly the Blue Jays for a spot in the playoffs. More than likely, Clemens will do what he did last year and not join the team until halfway into the season. Adding an ace like Roger Clemens part way through the season would still easily give them a bump of 5 extra wins. This would make the Yankees close to shoo-ins for the playoffs. The extra playoff revenues would more than make up for the dollar value of Roger Clemens' contract.

Overall, a mere $16-$18 million could buy the Yankees a one year commitment to a Cy-Young caliber pitcher and a ticket to playing in October. All signs point to this contract being well worth the money.

But its true. To the Yankees organization, that amount of money is practically chump change for a one-year commitment.

I know. It's so annoying. That's £8-£9 million over here. About 25% more than the top top footballers earn. I had no idea it was that much money!

Clemens would be a good addition to any team in Major League Baseball. He can get a job anywhere. I think the Yankees will only sign him if a division rival is going for him too. They don't really need Clemens, and whilst it would be a boost, I think they'd be better developing younger players, and leaving Clemens unless he's about to go to the Bo-Sox.

I think it makes more sense for him to go to the Red Sox, but I doubt it will happen. The Yankees don't really need another starter, assuming Pavano stays healthy and/or Philip Hughes gets called up. The Red Sox could shift Wakefield to the bullpen and they would have an outstanding #1-#5. Neither team NEEDS Clemens, but I think the Red Sox would be helped more. Now, the Astros on the other hand NEED Clemens.

As a Devil Rays fan, I hope he does end up with the Yanks and I hope he disrupts the hell out of the franchise so much that Red Sox player hurt themselves laughing about it...

No, no, and no. First off, he would need to commit to the whole season, not taking three months off like last year. Second, the guy is 43 or whatever, at some point he'll start to break down, and let someone else pay 18 million for that risk. Third, been there, done that, I love Roger but I'm getting tired of his act. Sign a contract or retire and get it over with already.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I hate the fact that he dictates his own schedule. I know he is a great pitcher and all, but show up for the entire season. Work hard like everybody else. No doubt he can still pitch though.

Unless he can get his hands on some HGH, it might be time for Clemens to hang up the spikes. He had a nice career. Hopefully, it won't be tarnished in the investigations that are currently taking place.

"He had a nice career." That's what you say about a 213 time Cy Young winner coming off a sub-3.00 year that still gets guys out and strikes fear in hitters. You Yanks fans don't deserve Clemens

213 time Cy Young Winner - that must be for his career, not one season... THAT would be a record!

That's a lot of Cy Young's indeed. And I don't think this chap is a Yankee fan or speaking for any Yankee fans. But why are Yankee fans undeserved?

the guy isn't worth it for the yanks or bosox. both were very likely make the playoffs. so, your paying all that money for a few postseason starts. i hate the fuck after throwing a bat at piazza. while i respect his greatness, i can't stand the guy and hope he's done.

You say that now but what about when the Sox move Papelbon to closer? When the Yanks lose Pavano to another mangina injury?

Clemens is a money grubbing chump...if he really loved the game, he would have signed earlier in the season. Dispicable and doesnt belong in the hall of fame.
