Should the Cubs Bring Back Mark Prior?

by Three-Finger Browning

Let me weigh in on the Mark Prior situation. We all know that Prior is injury-prone, and a torn labrum is seriously bad news. But the fact is that Chris Carpenter did come back from this injury, and so potentially can Prior.  This is a low-risk, high-upside situation.

Prior, if healthy, can be a key part of a great Cubs team in 2008. Prior, if sort of healthy, and a mediocre version of his former dominating self, can be a great steal at $3 million a year. Think of it this way: if someone will pay Juan Pierre $44 million, can't you justify spending $3 million on Prior just in case it works?  There is no such thing as too much quality starting pitching!

The Cub rotation in 2008 looks like this:

1. Carlos Zambrano

2. Rich Hill

3. Ted Lilly

4. Ryan Dempster

5. Sean Marshall? Kevin Hart? Jason Marquis? Prior?

It is always a good sign in my experience when there are a lot of candidates, because inevitably with pitching someone gets hurt, and very often someone else goes horribly wrong (see Glendon Rusch!). If the Cubs really want to trade, they should find a team desperate for starting pitching, and sell them on Jason Marquis. Don't expect a lot in return, because he has a big contract. It's not huge though; the main reason to move Marquis is because he is not needed in the rotation.

I don't think so. Ever since he got injured, he hasn't been the same at all. He's lost velocity and control. If the Cubs are smart, they will not keep it.

Yes. He is still affordable. In addition, Prior has a lot of upside. If he can stay healthy than it could be a very good move for the Cubs. If not, than it's no biggy.

The Cubs can always use a new guy to open the bullpen door for the relief pitchers.

I say "of course" -- mostly for the reasons you outline. He's really, really cheap at $3 million, has exceptional upside, and honestly, can probably be traded to a team that falls out of competition early for a vet who will walk come July.

I say go for youth, trade this guy away for a few pitching prospects. Like you said, there's alot of candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation, so I think they should be able to trade him for a few prospects.

Prior has had his chances...in last four seasons he has started a total of 57 games while an average pitcher would have started 140 games in that time. He is no good for anyone if he can't pitch more often than that.

It depends. How many rubberbands and chewing gum does Lou have in his pockets to keep his arm intact?

dusty baker single-handedly destroyed wood's and prior's career back in the stretch run of 2003 in a classic "sacrifice the future for the present" scenario. The best article I've read on this oft-brought up topic. http://baseb...d_wood_1.php

You have three guys on your rotation"possibles" list who will have ERA's close to or over 5.00. You know who they are: Dumpster,Marquis, and Prior. Saying Prior has upside is the same as saying Rex Grossman has upside. Oh yeah, if you mean best player on the DL. We have our collective fingers crossed on Kerry Wood/Will he now so why add Prior. Also our fingers are X'ed on Marquis and Dumpster. Give the first shot, then Marshall or Gallagher.
