Should Wedge have Walked Papi in 9th?

by user Ross K.

David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox hit two home runs against the Cleveland Indians last night, including a walk-off, three-run bomb in the 9th inning. It was Ortiz's second game-ending hit in three days and his fifth of they year. He has 12 walk-off hits in his four seasons in Boston.

This poses this question: Should the Tribe have walked Ortiz to load the bases in the 9th, just so he wouldn't get a chance to win the game?

It probably wouldn't have hurt. The Tribe was up 8-6, Ortiz was already the winning run. Sure, there was only one out, but a double play would have ended the game.

The Indians had rookie closer Fausto Carmona in the game, you have the option of letting him get experience against one of the games most clutch hitters or take some of the pressure off him by letting him pitch to the next guy: Manny Ramirez.

However I think in this situation, the Indians made the right choice even though it backfired. The Red Sox were having an awful day as it was, (losing Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek to injury), so you wouldn't expect them to have the effort to come back. Plus the Tribe isn't exactly looking at must-win situations, unfortunatly.

But what about other teams with the stretch run and the playoffs coming up? It will be every managers decision every time Ortiz comes up in the 9th when Boston is trailing by a run or two or three: do I take the chance or do I walk him?

I think in most situations the best advice to pitch just a bit outside.

I agree, it was the right call not to walk him. There is no reason to move two men into scoring position with only one out for Manny Ramirez. There is little to no dropoff from Ortiz to Manny, so you might as well go after Ortiz. It backfired this time, but it was the correct call.

It's not the wrong call by the book and not the wrong call when you think about having the bases loaded and Manny Ramirez coming up to bat. It just feels like the wrong move to ever pitch to Ortiz with the game on the line. It goes against any baseball logic but I just couldn't do it. You know the game's ending if you give him something to hit, I'd let someone else beat me at this point.

A point to consider - Manny Ramirez has the second most grand slams in MLB history. It would be a tough call to intentionally face Manny with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth if it could be avoided. But also a tough call to pitch to Ortiz in a late-inning clutch situation. Flip a coin, I say.
Friskyman brought up an intersting point in a different thread - walk them both and try your luck with Lowell.

Walk Ortiz to load the bases? Only Lou Gehrig has hit more grand slams than Manny Ramirez. There is not a manager in baseball that would walk Ortiz in that situation, which puts the tying run on second base and the winning run on base with one out. Ortiz may have been more dramatic lately, but Manny has just been crushing the ball. Wedge needed a soft tossing lefty to go at Ortiz with and then he could have held his breath with Manny. Once two men reached base and Wedge decided to let his young closer learn a lesson, Papi obliged.

I definitely would have walked both and taken my chances with Lowell. There was no doubt Ortiz was going to kill you there, and if he didn't Manny would. Both are hot as can be. You don't pitch to them in that situation. I don't care if it does put the tying and winning runs in scoring position.

Walking both would have scored a run, put the tying run on third, and the winning run on second with one out.

But the run on second would have been a big fatty that hits game winning home runs :-)

As I said, BBall, I know that would have put the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Better than letting the tying and winning runs trot around the bases. Who knows, Lowell might have grounded in to a double play and Wedge would have looked like a genius.

With the Indians where they are in the pennant race (nowhere), there's not a whole lot of use overthinking it. Of course they still want to win, but it's more valuable to give Carmona a chance to pitch out of his mess. Even if it did backfire.

As a rookie you need as much experience as possible, so it was the right decision to pitch to Ortiz. But there is no doubt that David Ortiz is becoming one of the most clutch athletes in all of sports. And he is carving such a reputation for himself in clutch situations that I think if this happens again in the future, they may walk Ortiz and take their chances with Manny.

Amongst all this talk of grand slams, there's one crucial point. Walk Papi, then all Manny needs to do is single to center or right and then the game's tied.

That's why you walk them both.
