Should Coughlin Sit Starters???

Obviously the biggest question heading into this Saturday's overrated game between the New England Patriots (15-0), and the New York Giants (10-5) is whether or not NYG head coach, Tom Coughlin, should/will play his starters.  There are reasonable arguments for both sides, but there really isn't a right or wrong choice.  Yes, the Giants are already in the playoffs as the 5th seed from the NFC, which usually means he should rest his starters.  But, then again, they are playing the undefeated Patriots, who everyone hates (or, in Boston's eyes, loves), and many want them to lose at least one game.  After saying that, you can argue that even if Coughlin plays his starters, and NY gives it their all, they will still come up short, so why bother???

If New York pass rushers, Michael Strahan, and Osi Umenyiora bring theor 'A' game, they have a chance of forcing a few turnovers, and if the inconsistent Eli Manning takes advantage of those turnovers, then this could be a pretty close game.

So-called "experts" have been bashing Eli, and his G-men all year long, including former teammate Tiki Barber, who is now referred to as a douche (by me).  Eil has done a pretty good job at proving them wrong, leading (somedays) his team to a wild card berth (NY's 3rd straight), but the Giants are, without a doubt, the worse 10 win team in the National Football League.  I really don't see NY getting far in the playoffs, as of right now, NY will be playing the 10-5 Seattle Seahawks, and I think Seattle would win this matchup.  So, if I was Coughlin, I may take a chance and start Eli, and maybe play him for the fisrt half, at halftime I would think it over, and either sit him, or play him in the 2nd half depending on how it's going so far.

As for Bill Belichick, I would deffinitely sit Tom Brady, and let Matt Cassel make his first career NFL start.  If he REALLY wants to go 16-0, then he can just put Brady in if/when Cassel gets into trouble, kinda as a reliever in Baseball.  But, hey, that's just what I would do if I was in Belichick's shoes.  But, knowing how Belichick coaches, he'd probably play Brady, and Moss so they can get their records.   My Prediction: Patriots win 35-14.

Answer to Question: Coughlin should SIT starters.  Give Eli a break, and get him ready for the playoffs, 'cause he's gonna need it.

Hope you enjoyed the 935423587573487523458th article on the Patriots this season.

Wouldn't Belichick get questioned if Brady or Moss get injured? Then it'll be nasty in Boston...

Give Eli a break? For what? He's gonna suck in the playoffs anyway.

I don't really care if NY sits or plays their starters. What I would love to see is the ORIGINAL LT be brought out of retirement just for this game and blitz on every down. A couple of bags of blow ought to keep the old guy's energy level up for an encore presentation of the "Theismann Hit".

If he plays QB for NY, then let's just give the Pats the win right now, so we don't have to watch him embarrass himself.

I think that Brady should be sat down for this game, but he won't be. If he doesn't get hurt and breaks those records, then it'll have been good for the Patriots and their fans to have that. However, if Brady gets hurt, Big Bill will be questioned always for it, and it will cost them the Super Bowl.

The Giants on the other hand, should sit everyone that is even a little bit banged up, and play everyone else. Burress definitely shouldn't be active for this game, nor should Jacobs. Strahan should probably be given a rest too, and Eli should probably only play a half.

Everyone is right that the game really doesn't matter, but I know that if I were Coughlin, I'd sit most of my starters and blitz every down that Brady is in the game. I'd also have my corners beat the crap out of Moss inside five yards.

Giants have got to make the Pats earn their 16-0, even if they have a matchup with the Bucs in Round one coming up the following week. -Kwass

The Giants have nothing to play for....its not like they will be remembered as the team to lose the 16th game to the Patriots (they will 1 of 16). They dont have to sit them the entire game. Playing a half or three quarters would be fine. Keep the guys active and in game form. Pull them and let them go into the playoffs fresh. Remember, they are in the NFC and there are not too many teams to be that scared of. Obviously the Packers are tough ecspecially at home and the cowgirls are playing well, but neither if the two are comparable to the Patriots. Sit the starters and hope you have the opportunity to meet them again.....IN THE SUPERBOWL. around the league

I think there is no better way to figure out what you want to do as a football team, by playing the Patriots. Think about it...if you were a playoff team, wouldn't you want to scrimmage against the best, right before the playoffs? Of course you would. The only thing I'm wondering is if the NFL putting it on CBS and NBC puts some wanted pressure on the Giants. Are they saying, "Coach Coughlin, no pressure, but the whole world is watching"? It may be subtle (or not so subtle...TWO NETWORKS?!?), but it is a factor whether or not Coach Coughitup plays his guys. Giants will win...Graham to Toomer puts em' on top, 20-16. Go BIG BLUE!!!! From what I see on ESPN, the Giants want to play and so do the Patriots. The big difference is The Patriots have the next week off and the Giants don't.I'm a Giant fan and I know that they are doing it with mirrors so far. That having been said Coughlin can't afford another injury to any of his starters. He should not play his starters for longer than he would in a pre-season game.

Tom Coughlin would be an idiot to play his starters. The Pats have a chance at history, the Giants have a chance at nothing. Any minimal gains they would get from playing/winning this game are not even close to being worth it when it comes to risking injuries. People like to bash Eli, but the hefty lefty is his backup. They've already lost Shockey, Derrick Ward and Kiwi, they don't need more injuries. If Coughlin plays his starters and ANYONE gets hurt, he should be fired.

Re-hash joke of the week: They should sit Eli and give themselves a chance to win. Unless of course you want to see a 4 int blowout.

If the game is close, leave them in. If the game is a blow out in either New England's or New York's favor, pull 'em!

Honestly, is there a better way to enter the playoffs than beating the Patriots? By doing so the Giants become the team to beat, or at worst "The team no one wants to play". Doing what Dallas, Pittsburgh, Indy, and San Diego could not do gives them an edge in a single elimination tournament. They can rush the passer, they can run the ball, and beating NE will instantly curre Eli's head problems, making the Giants a formidable playoff team. I say go for broke, because unless they beat the Pats they are done in the first round anyway.

I agree. Play hard the first half and if the lead is less than 3 scores keep fighting until the game is "over". Yank once the lead gets to three scores and the leading team has the ball. I still say the Giants have more to gain by winning this game than they do by resting their starters.
