Sheffield to Tigers

11
Vote

The New York Yankees have traded Gary Sheffield to the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees receive Humberto Sanchez and two A-ball pitchers, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett, in return for Sheff.

The Tigers are likely to extend Sheffield's contract. Sheffield is due $13 million for 2007.

If he's healthy, this helps the Tigers next year, but Sheffield is getting a little old to extend his contract much further.

I think they're a team like the Yankees that can afford to make that gamble, though. They've got a deep outfield with Granderson, Monroe, Thames and Ordonez. They'll take Sheffield while he's healthy, and when he's not, they have a perfectly capable backup behind him. They can probably also platoon Sheffied to take a little stress of his old body. Great pickup for the Tigers.

Deep Outfield? Isn't this the same NYY team that was struggling to fill their Starting Outfield Spots last season?

I meant in the respect that they are deep. Like the Yankees.

Sorry, that was still pretty vague. Let me clarify further. I didn't mean that the Yankees outfield was deep, just that they were deep in general. They tend to be able to find guys to fill in in a pinch. Yes, they had outfield injuries last year, but with the acquisition of Abreu and the emergence of Melky Cabrera, they had an abundance of outfielders by the end of the season. The way that the Yankees are deep in general, the Tigers are deep in the outfield. So, they can afford to take a gamble on a guy that might not play a lot, but will give them great production when he does.

Maybe he can learn how to revive his post-enhancement career from the master himself, Pudge "I stole my nickname from (a guy that earned it by looking like he had a load in his pants) Carlton Fisk" Rodriguez...

Well, there goes any chance the Tigers may have had of winning it all next year.
