Sheffield and Young Should be in San Francisco

5
Vote

by user Pat Dean

All Star games are about entertainment and allow fans to vote on the players who can best bestow them with this satisfaction. Sometimes these selections come at a price to pay, resulting in deserving players being left out of a reward. With Americas favorite past time’s version of its stars amongst stars event next week at AT&T Park, a few rebuttals must be presented. For starters, how can an American League All Star Team be assembled with Tigers’ slugger Gary Sheffield absent from the roster? Looking in this bird’s eye point of view, I’M 110% certain that no General Manage or Owner would say that Grady Sizemore, Alex Rios, or Carl Crawford is a more superior player than Sheffield. And if you tend to in the minority of fans who do not comprehend this, I must inform you quickly that facts don’t adorn results. For example, Sheff’s batting average of .290 ranks higher than any of the above mentioned players and if that’s not enough for you than ask yourself if any of those names have more homers than the 18 Sheff has blasted this season. The other snub that discomposes me gratefully comes from the National League. How can a pitcher who has not given up a homerun in his last 69 2/3 innings of work be defrauded of A TRIP TO San Francisco? The fella I speak of is the Padres strong arm, Chris Young. Young has an ERA of 2.14 to go along with a solid 8-3 record that could easily be at least 11-0 if the Padres’ deplorable team batting average of .222 improved. Somehow the National League felt better equipped to have six closers for a game they have not won since Ozzie Smith was still playing. At the end of the day the fans and Major League Baseball selected the appropriate representatives for the most part, however the snubbing of Sheffield and Young leaves me with a malodorous.

GARY FRIGGIN SHEFFIELD!! Yes, I agree with you there. OK, I understand, all the ladies voted for Sizemore.

Carl Crawford over SHEFFIELD!? Are you nuts, fans? 20 SBS, OK. .285 AVG. BIG drop compared to last year's .305. He's doing OK, but I'd definitely pick Sheffield over Crawford without a doubt.

Sheffield over Rios? ehh..(1/2 and 1/2). They seem pretty equal to me. Rios-Shef: .288-.290 (BA), 17-18 (HRs), 46-52 (RBIs), .339-401 (OBP), .514-.530 (SLG)...OK, now I see what you're talking about. Plus, the Tigers are actually going somewhere with Sheffield, whereas Rios and the Jays? 3rd place now? That's not good. Shef has led the Tigers in many categories, like you said, and the Tigers might have a chance at first place again this year, even though there's more competition with the Indians.

Don't forget, Shef has 11 SBs as well, to go against Crawford and his "power" (6 homers)..

You left one guy out, Pat. Also, shocking coming from me, but I think that Sheffield deserves it over Manny Ramirez, DEFINITELY. Manny Ramirez, slumped in Apil with a (roughly) .200 AVG. He only has 11 HRs, compared to Shef's 18, a .386 OBP, compared to Shef's .401, a .472 SLG, compared to Shef's .530. The funny thing is that Verlander, Ordonez, Pudge, Polanco, and Guillen all got in, when the truth is that half of them are less deserving than, not only Gary Sheffield, but some of the others that play their positions.

Oh, I forgot about Chris Young. 1.086 WHIP, which is better than John Smoltz's 1.230, Brad Penny's 1.118, Cole Hammel's 1.218, and Ben Sheet's 1.155. The only SP that has a WHIP better than Chris Young's is his teammate, Jake Peavy, who is probably going to be the Cy Young winner if he keeps it up (1.054).

Next, we have the ERA. Chris Young's 2.14 is better than John Smoltz's 3.07, Sheets's 3.19, and Hammels's 3.87. Penny's solid 2.00 and Peavy's 2.07 are the only two that are better than Young's.

Young is overlooked so much because Jake Peavy is their ace. If Young was on another, there's no doubt in my mind that he'd be talked about more and that he would've made it to the all star game without getting the final vote. And we all know that he deserves the final vote more than Oswalt, Zambrano, Gorzalenny, and Webb.

Crawford and Rios have to be on the team, because of the one-player-from-every-team rule. And I would absolutely take Sizemore over Sheffield...sure, Sheff's a better hitter (although not by as much as you'd think), but Sizemore plays good defense in center field, while Sheffield's a DH. I'd take Curtis Granderson above Sheffield just from the Tigers, b/c Granderson plays CF too. I do agree that Manny shouldn't be there, though.
