Watford were fastest out of the blocks and hit the Owls with frightening pace from ther outset, determined to make up for their poor showing against Blackpool at the weekend.
Early pressure from the Hornets brought results as Lee Williamson flicked on a 6th minute corner for Darius Henderson to slam the ball home for his 6th of the season.
Having seen a one-nil lead slip in their last two games Watford continued to press, Henderson looking sharp as he finds the form to keep club record signing Nathan Ellington stuck on the bench. A dangerous ball into the box from the left saw Henderson held down by two Wednesday defenders, the ref had no hesitation pointing to the spot and Marlon King stepped up to cooly notch his third penalty of the season, 2-0 Watford.
Watford continued to dominate the play and were playing some lovely, flowing, attacking football when they were caught out defending too deeply on the half-hour, Kavanagh's strike from the edge of the area evading the dive of Mart Poom.
Despite one more chance for Watford where Henderson headed a superb King cross against the post on the stroke of half-time it was largely all Wednesday from that point on, particularly in the second half where Watford were lucky that Poom somehow wasn't tested more. Wednesday were reduced to 10 men with 3 minutes left as the right back clumsily went through on-loan Middlesborough winger Adam Johnson yet again and picked up his second booking. Watford held on and saw the game out to run out 2-1 winners and retain their spot at the top of the Championship table.
