Sheff Being Sheff

Notoriously outspoken Gary Sheffield has again made headlines by calling Joe Torre saying Torre doesn't treat black and white the players the same.

"Black players are treated differently than white players, particularly at Yankee Stadium. Black players had an issue with Joe Torre. They weren't treated like everybody else. Even I got called out in a couple of meetings that I thought was unfair." ~ Gary Sheffield to HBO's Andrea Kremer

What about Derek Jeter who's father is black and mother is white?

"Derek Jeter is black and white. There's really no significance. [He] just ain't all the way black." ~ Sheffield

So that means Joe Torre is a racist right? Well, according to Sheffield, he is not.

A quick look back at history can make you wonder about the credabilility of Sheffield's word. Darryl Strawberry was in tears after the 1999 World Series and openly thanked Torre for giving him a chance to play. Mariano Rivera has never had a beef with Torre. Neither has Bernie Williams.

Buster Olney brought up a good point in his ESPN Blog.

"Torre's way of handling slumps, sometimes, is to call out the best players -- the players who he believes possess the most confidence to deal with criticism; it's a way of drawing all the players together. If he picks on only the youngest and most fragile players, like a Clay Bellinger or an Andy Phillips or a Colter Bean, then he would have no credibility. He's criticized Clemens in meetings and Jeter and O'Neill and Williams."

That makes perfect sense. Sheffield should almost feel honored that his manager called him out. Perhaps, Torre thought highly of Sheffield. Perhaps, it is part Torre's fault and part Sheffield's fault. Sheffield probably should have appraoched Torre after the meetings in question and discussed his feelings.

Sheffield later gave several exscuses when asked about the interview, making himself look like the goat. "I'm always put into situations where I will fail." "When you're hearing from your manager that they should have gotten Vladimir Guerrero, that's disrespectful, but nobody ever came to my defense and said it was."

It's like Manny being Manny according to a baseball person. And he/she is right. Sheffield has always been outspoken about himself, so why start taking these seriously now?

It's still a serious topic that should be discussed. People usually don't just throw this kind of material around all the time.

But being Sheffield, you still have to discount it a bit.

Shef is a fool for burning all of his bridges like he is in the process of doing. Maybe he and T.O. will hit the road together after their playing careers end - The Tour - "Why Doesn't anyone Love me, Some Me."

The whole steroids issue and him getting a pass aside, I think he is a decent guy who just shoots his mouth off. He says things that are inflammatory about the lack of African-American players, but he also backs it up by funding little leagues and being willing to work with Selig on inner city development programs. I think that sometimes he is too quick to play the race card or attributes something that happened to him as something that happens universally. That said, I agree with Orioles. That doesn't mean that there is no prejudice whatsoever. It has been proven time and again in numerous studies that race affects how people perceive others and are perceived on a subconscious level, there is no reason that sports is exempt from that.

Gary Sheffield shows many of the signs, traits, and actions of a melon head (relatively firm on the outside, soft and squishy on the inside, better suited for eating than whatever thoughts may come forth). Gary’s agenda has always been about Sheffield first, team second. Throughout his career he has taken advantage of a live microphone by extending criticisms of others while offering excuses for himself.

Bottom Line: Gary, you ain’t “The Man” because “The Man” steps up in critical situations and handles the critical heat that arises from those situations. You’ve already indicated that you don’t always give 100%, will cheat to inflate your own statistics, have a twisted opinion on how others handle authority, and now you can’t admit that you couldn’t stand the heat in the kitchen.

I won’t hold my breath waiting for you to explain how you’ve earned your salaries, and I can exhale now as you steadily head to the obscurity you deserve. You’ll probably pop off again because someone will stick a microphone in your face, just like a melon head.

Gary Sheffield should be far more focussed on helping Jim Leyland's Detroit Tigers win a World Series rather than worrying about Joe Torre's floundering New York Yankees.
