She's Only Seventeen

Michelle Wie (cue theme music She’s only 17 ) had a terrible year on the golf course, it doesn’t take an expert to figure that out.  She only broke par once all year and withdrew from three tournaments.  After her initial burst onto the scene Michelle Wie has struggled to maintain credibility on the golf course.  Now experts are looking at her and wondering exactly what will she do next?

Michelle Wie is the classic example of a child prodigy who was pushed too hard too early and now she has completely burned out.  Many wanted her to be the female Tiger Woods, she will never live up to anywhere near that billing.  Tiger Woods loves and respects the sport of golf.  When he was twelve he played with twelve year olds and continued to play with his age group till turning pro while in his 20’s.  His father was there to foster his career to make him the best golfer he could be. Tiger never worried, or wanted the fame or the glory, he just wanted to win.

Michelle Wie loves the spotlight.  She enjoys the glitz and glamour of the red carpet.  She is not as enthused about stepping onto the course on a regular basis.  Far too often in the past year, Wie has been more concerned about finding the appropriate matching accessories to wear on the course instead of finding the appropriate club to use.   While watching her play it becomes apparent she was a talented child who had some promise.  As a result her parents saw the dollar signs and pushed her to become a circus side show act, rather than a credible golfer.

The window for Wie is closing quickly.  It is cute to see a young teen struggling and trying to make a name for herself on the LPGA and even the PGA.  It’s not interesting to watch an eighteen year old is whining and flaming out in a blaze of glory. If Michelle Wie wants to maintain her celebrity status, she better wins and wins very soon.

Perhaps some time away from the course to nurse her injured wrist is exactly what Wie needs.  At the very least that will save her another embarrassing withdrawal when she is one shot away from being kicked off the LPGA.  Whatever she it is, she needs to make a decision soon, because eighteen is right around the corner and she won’t like it (cue Wie’s new theme music)

We're done with Michelle Wie right? The novelty of her playing against the guys is gone. Hell, she's not even that good against other women! And she's always got some lame, high-school quality excuse whenever she plays badly. She's nearing PR-train wreck status.

She's going to revolt against her parents as soon as she hits 18, and the road she'll take is the opposite one she's been on, we're looking at possibly another Lindsay Lohan here. She's incredibly talented, but look how Tiger turned out. He was kicking everyone's ass when he was a kid, but he followed the right path, which prepared him for what he's doing now.

Earl Woods was never "Dad of the Year"

No, he wasn't. But Tiger wasn't thrown to the media wolves like Michelle Wie was at as young an age. He went to school until the NCAA basically drove him into the PGA. I think the fact financial rewards were so massive was just gravy- he knew the cash would be there whener he decided to go pro.

The way Michelle Wie's handlers have managed her career is absolutely criminal. It seems like there was never any semblance of a long-term career plan. They've pimped her out to any half-ass PGA tourney that would exempt her and pay her to show up, without thinking about what the scrutiny and the repeated losing would to her psyche.

I agree that Michelle Wie's situation has the potential to turn really ugly.

Exactly. Earl Woods wasnt the best in the world. But he set up a plan for Tiger. Allowing him to learn and dominate each age group as he grew older. Wie's parents allowed and encuraged her corruption. And they are a big part to blame in her downfall
